• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Water flatten problem

In my new project I have some trouble with hydro flattens (see attachment).
I created SRTM mesh with LOD 12 and now have rivers and lakes with wrong heights. Is there a way to simply delete the default flatten of a lake/river?
The flatten of that river also seems weird. It looks like the flatten command only follows the river vaguely with very low-res interpolation.

Anybody had that problem before?

Yes. Default flattens can be excluded. But it is most likely that it is the waterpolygon you wish to exclude, as that has flatten characteristics. Look at the default scenery with TMFViewer, and you should be able to see what's causing the problem.

SBuilderX, or someother progam can then exclude the poly and let you make a new one. Reading the SDK for Scenery and terrain won't hurt either.

Thanks for that, Dick. I was just hoping there'd be a solution where I only exclude the flatten, not the actual water poly, because I would have to redraw all rivers that way.

This is really worrying me, becuase either I've f*** up my fsx or that flatten issue is a fsx bug. All my rivers around the world show those stupid flattens. Is this normal behaviour?

Default polygonal water in FSX has Z values and causes "flattening."

If you wish to change this you have two options that I can think of:
1) Exclude default polygonal water and replace.
2) Modify your terrain.cfg to remove flattening behavior of water polygons.

Thanks for the clarification, Doug. Unfortunately all rivers look like that if you use mesh resolution at 1m. But as that does not seem to make any sense anyway I will tell the users to use 19m as the ideal setting. That way the flatten is acceptable.

Still would've been nice being able to exclude those stream-flattens.

Thorsten,

I think you are correct that the FSX terrain line feature "stream lines" has a texture that appears to meander (RiverSU.bmp), but the flatten follows the vector exactly. Not such a big problem unless you crank the mesh resolution up.

You can edit the default entry in terrain.cfg such that the FlattenOffsetMeters is 0 which you may or may not like.

I will also need to tell users to use 19m mesh resolution, for completely other reason than yours - airport with sloped runway also only displays 100% correct with that mesh resolution.

You mean a smooth sloping? I have lots of sloped (=bumpy) runways in my current project and 1m or 19m doesn't seem to change anything.

No, I mean a hard surface (concrete)runway made as a model in G-Max and surrounded with sloped flattens. Model of runway needed an extraordinary high level of precision as far as elevation of points on border with the rest of terrain is concerned and this runway really displays properly and without any mistakes ( in most cases underying terrain causes flickering - despite the flattens)only at 19m mesh resolution, but that's because model was optimised to look properly at that resolution.

Try creating an exclude polygon (Vector Scenery) around your river with the tag:
"Exclude everything"

Hi Thorsten,

I know this is an old topic, but I had the same problem with rivers, and solved it by using a vector poly "Exclude all streams". Maybe this can be useful to anyone having this issue ;)

Best regards,

The original question was about how to remove the flatten call from default water polygons, but that's not possible. You'd have to remove the water polys and/or replace them with custom polys without flattens.
The river issue was about the flattens that FSX applies to them. They only look good if the mesh setting is 5m of higher.

Hi Thorsten,

Suggest you get in touch with JPFIL as he managed to change the rivers and mesh for the whole of Quebec.

I think this discussion took a wrong turn.
The question was not about how to create custom lakes and rivers but about if it's possible to only remove their flattens without changing the polygons/vectors. The latter is only possible if you edit the terrain.cfg, which should not be done as it affects other sceneries.

Hi Thorsten,

I thought at first you wanted to remove this kind of "ditch" when using 1m mesh resolution:

Sorry for the misunderstanding.
