Weathering Aircraft Carrier Ident Numbers?

Hey all I wanted to know how you would weather the numbers on an aircraft carrier? renumbering this one and I wanted to get the same weathered affect. I'm using photoshop.

Set several layers with contrasting dirt colors, don’t be shy, like black-purple and dark orange and full each layer with the paint bucket, then download “dirty brushes,” there are many styles and almost any will work. Use the eraser tool with a dirty brush applied, to partially erase each layer, about halfway. Now use transparency levels of each layer, including the numbers layer, to achieve the desired effect.

Different layers with different brushes and brush sizes and different opacity are your friend here. You can google for some wear brushes, but I find myself using the stock most of the time.
