• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

When we transformed SceneryDesign.org into FsDeveloper.com we thought it would be a good idea to make special entry points to the site for scenery designers, aircraft designers, mission designers, etc. So we made a portal for each category so that they could view the news most interesting to them there.

At the moment we are reviewing the structure of the website a bit, as some changes will be made to it in the near future (can't tell you more details now ;)). You my question is, are you actually using these portals or can we get rid of them?

If you have others suggestions we can look at while reviewing the structure of the website, please let us know as well.

Actually I always enter the site via the missions-portal (if I'm not clicking on the post-notification-mails), but I never found there anything interesting (except the current polls).
In our forum at vfr-flightsimmer.de we also discussed the portal recently, and I have to admit I have no idea how we could make the portal more interesting.
The idea ist just fine, but I have never seen a portal which made me continuing visiting it - it's just easier to simply go to the forums straightaway.

I guess one of the problems with the mission portal is also that there is no mission related news :). That news section of the forum is still completely empty.

I think that for the site update it would be better to remove the portals and just have an informative front page. But with this poll I want to see how many people actually use the current portals first.

Guess you're right. As a moderator it'd have been me who should have posted some news. But as it's mostly not me who gets the interesting news first I think I will encourage other users more to post news on the missions-news-forum. :)

In case some people read this, everybody can post news items in these forums. They just have to be approved by a moderator or an administrator first before they appear.

But seeing the lack of news in some sections, I think after restructuring the site we will just have one big news section again :).

I have never used th portals and I'm not sure what benefit they provide. One point of entry appears to be best for me as it give a consistent and clear branding - FS Developer.

The idea behind it when we introduced this site was that the new community might be too big for some developers. So the portals provide you an entry point that focusses only on your aspect of addon development. For example only scenery stuff for a scenery design, so that he does not really have to care about the aircraft design going on at the same site as well.

Hi Arno

I think that is a very fair point. On the other hand it is easy enough to ignore those forums that are not of interest

It was an idea we had a few months ago, but I think you are right that it does not really work and one frontpage should be OK :).

Arno, I really only read and participate in the scenery section. To that end I like the portal because its the quickest way for me to see the new or active message threads.

Hi Folks

Arno -
Personally I'd like to see them remain in place please.

Whilst there may be no news/info ATM,
that doesn't mean to say there won't be in the near future. :)

It'll be far more useful to direct persons from other sites to.

They'd also be far more useful if they contained a direct link
to their dedicated forum sections,
rather than just a list of recent posts.

Currently you have to go back to the main menu
click the forum entry,
then down to say Missions.

Likewise for the Misssion wiki.

Personally my bookmark points to latest posts, :D
but that's coz I'm interested in all aspects.

That is good argument, Paul.
On second thought would it be possible that the moderaters could adjust the main frame of their portals (in my case the missions portal)? That'd be great. :)

Hi Paul, Thorsten,

Seeing that about a quarter of the users is using the portals, I think they should indeed stay. Having them does not really add that much work as well :).

For the moderator having control over the content, that sounds like a good idea. I'll see what I can do on that.

Please let portals stay...

...I will add also some mission news in may, when I hope to finish my
current FSX project.

At present, I have to wait for some aircraft data from smithonian museum,
Washington D.C.

I have to wait in zipline for three weeks, because Im not Elvis.

Greetings

Sounds good, let's encourage everybody again to submit their addon development related news. So no news about finished projects please, there are enough sites for that already. Unless you project is a tool that other developers can use of course :D.

Yes, please no advertisement for your projects here on the forum.

Arno, let me know if I can help you in any way. ;)

I always enter via "Forums"; find that the most efficient way to go via all the threads...but that's my opinion!

My own opinion is that if we have a basic opening HTML page, that links everything together... Forums, Wiki etc this will do.

The current opening page is just "too much" information.

First of all I should like to apologise if this is in the wrong section.
When you enter via the main site URL http://www.fsdeveloper.com/ you are presented with various items. One of them is the site navigation which I presume is the only way to get to the portals. This in itself is a bit limited. The portals don't really lead you anywhere. For example if you click on Scenery Design you get the latest threads. To then go anywhere you must go to the site navigation again. Wouldn't it be better if you incorporated the link from Scenery Design with a drop down sub menu that would give links to the forums, the wiki, the showroom (this isn't even mentioned in the site naviagtion)? And then do the same for the other links? The link to the wiki is not correct as it shows a page to re-direct. The main page in my opinion should be re-designed to get rid of the little pics at the top and a nice short welcome message. The history etc could be added to the site navigation box. The centre box could show the days postings for whatever section, be it design, showroom or wiki. The wiki doesn't have the site navigation box either. I think this should be put on every page instead of perhaps the links at the top. This would give instant access to everywhere on the site.
There is no link to the old postings or archives - do you get rid of them or do they stay there? It is just that one day I was looking for information on spotlights or something and I found myself on a page with lots of links to various threads - something like the search link. Unfortunately I lost the url as I clear my history every day , so I can't give any more details.
Anyway these are just some of my ideas.:)
