• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Problem with multiple booleans

Hi there- Im creating a hanger in Gmax and in the high LOD version I want to add some more detail by cutting out bits of the front and back wall. By 'cutting' I mean a result similar to the 'push-pull' tool in Sketchup where there is detail added to a continuous mesh.

The first boolean works fine and I get the detail I want (see bool1 image) with the areas that were in 'operand B' intersecting to create detail in my hanger (operand A)

However, when I go to do the second boolean the result is not as I expected- Instead of detail being added where operand B is (which just intersects slightly see Bool2 image), the whole face that I wanted to 'cut' looks as if it's removed instead? (see Bool result image)

What's going on?

I've had the same issue in the past. I'm just posting so that when the answer comes up I'll have it too.

I dont know if this helps, but I have noticed I cannot use Boolean twice without 'odd' results... unless i re-convert the original (one I'm keeping) object back into an editable mesh, THEN apply the second boolean operation...

Just a thought... I have NO idea if this will solve your issue...

Good Luck

Hi Ed
Yep I've already tried converting it back to an editable mesh but that hasn't seemed to help.

Instead of a boolean, try using a Shape Merge!

Create a rectangular spline object, then select the hanger object, and Shape Merge the spline.

You should be able to convert to e-poly, select the new polygon and extrude/intrude as you wish.

Or use Edge/Cut and use the box as a template...Alternately you can try Edge/Chamfer and extrude inwards...

It is a bug

After using the boolean function I switch short to another tool like "standard primitives". The I select the boolean function again. With this intermediate change it works like expected. Nevertheless, this way out sucks. The bug is in since generations of 3DMax.

Regards
Mike
