• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

1 meter in gmax = 1 meter in FSX?

Yes, but in Max/GMax you want to have the system set up to:

1 unit = 1 meter

Also ensure you select the units as Metric in the Customize and Units set-up menu items.

That's rather much the point of setting up the System Unit Scale to be "1 unit = 1 meter"

This allows whatever "units" you choose to model in to be automatically rescaled when exporting.

This way, we can model using whatever measuring system we prefer: meters, or feet.

After fifty-nine years working with feet/inches, I'm so accustomed to it that's what I normally use, unless my "plans" have metric dimensions explicitly specified. :)

Didn't you build ships at an early age using CUBITS?

Point taken. I think the default installation units are generic - hence no indication of what you are measuring in. So I suggested setting the units.:D

Here in Canada, we were fortunate that the government decided to follow the states and go metric in the '70s;). So half my life inches/feet/deg F and the last half m/km/deg C.

Boy, I hope it warms up today - only going up to 32 today.;)

I think the main thing that confuses many is that there are two places in Max/GMax where setting may be made:

System Unit Scale - controls how Max/GMax scales the exported mesh's dimensions.

Modeling Unit Scale - sets what measurement system the modeler wishes to use in Max/GMax.

Fr. Bill,

Agreed - took me a while to get that straight.

While I've got you on the line - just want to say thanks for the excellent tutorial on VC Gauge Backlighting and the follow-up on FS insider. It cleared up alot of problems for me.

okey :) is there any way to "shrink" the models? I have made a model that is too big, it is 16m where it is supposed to be 10m, so is there any way to scale it down to 10 or do I have to remake the whole model ?

Read-up on the select - uniform scale - emphasis on uniform. you can reduce it. Buton beside the move and rotate ones. has a little square box in it.

Happened to me too in the beginning - my 150 was the size of a 737.

You are most welcome. I try to share as much as possible when able... :teacher:
