• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

3D Game Textures using PS (book)

Hello Everyone,
I'm a recent subscriber to this forum and want to try my hand at 3D FSX Scenery Design. Looking for a good reference book on creating 3D textures to help flatten the learning curve a bit. ;)

Saw this at a local bookstore yesterday, and see that it's on it's third edition and has gotten some fairly decent reviews on amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/Game-Textures..._B001ILIBAQ_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342719618&sr=1-1

Anyone familiar with it? Have an opinion? Other suggestions?
Thanks, in advance, for any info. This is a terrific forum BTW, much much more than I expected to find, as a newbie to FSX 3D graphics design.

I dont' know the book, but to have a good reference for the creation of textures is very important, because you will have to arrange some texure, I have now a proyect which is stoped because I don't know how to make the texture, I should paint them, (it's a ship) , but problably the book will be a little more complicated than needed for Fsx. but always will be interesting.

Thank you for your response. Yes, that is my thinking also. Plus, it has been my observation that well rendered realistic (or, at least 'believable') texture seems to be the 'x' factor which sets apart most of the great objects and scenes from the ordinary ones. I think it is well worth extra time and effort to master those skills.

I've decided to go ahead and purchase it. Guess I'll be breaking new ground; since no one seems familiar with it? Maybe I'll eventually post a review here, if anyone is interested?

From what can be read in Amazon's Look Inside feature, I don't think you'll have wasted your money. :)

Thank you Tom. I sort of got that feeling also, while paging through an actual copy at the store. Most the passages I read seemed to ring with a certain authority from practical experience, not just extrapolating from a user's manual, like a lot of 'how to' books. That's usually a good sign. I'll let you know if both our intuitions are correct, in a bit.

Yes, it's defiantly a great resource.
Although not everything is applicable to FSX (using different material types in max) it's very handy and I've learnt a lot of things. Esp. how to use different PS filters to give you interesting effects.

Thank you! That's especially good news today, since I was just getting ready to order a copy.:D

It is a good resource and worth it.
Additionally I believe investing time in improving your texturing skills really makes a difference in scenery development.
