3ds Max 2008/Windows 10 (licence error)

Hi guys,

Just moved over to Windows 10 (from 7) and am using 3ds Max 2008.

Initially it seemed to work fine, but the licence keeps failing with a reactivation attempt throwing up the "Activation limit exceeded" error.

Autodesk can then give me a new code (by speaking to someone) which seems to work for a bit, but then fails (maybe due to a Windows update).

Is anyone else here using the Win 10/Max 2008 combo successfully? I checked this a while ago and it seemed all good, but wondering if something has changed. Max 2008 isn't officially supported on Win 10, unfortunately. The prog itself seems to work just fine, the issue is the licence.

You can run Max for 7 days without a licence, so worst-case I might have to do that and request a new activation code each week, but obviously that's far from ideal!

Thanks.

I have Win 10 and Max 2008, both 32- and 64-bit, installed and both still run happily. I haven't a clue what your problem might be, but always found a Google would find the answer fairly quickly, and not always on Autodesk's support forums either... :scratchch

Thanks very much for the reply, Tom!

*Huge* relief to know that it does still work and that the problem isn't unresolvable. Both times I've got a new activation key and discussed the issue with Autodesk's customer service dept I was reminded that it's not officially supported, with one agent telling me it wasn't compatible and that was likely the problem.

Are you using Win 10 Pro 64-bit?

Also, if you open the Portable License Utility (in the Autodesk folder) does it list a single license, or more? Mine shows two, both showing codes of (000-000...).

And finally... Do you run Max under any particular compatibility mode or have 'Run as administrator' selected?

Thanks for the help, I have Googled but so far not found anything.

I run Win10 Pro (had to check...) and the PLU lists one licence only. I was fairly sure I had Max in Vista compatibility as well as Run as Admin, but properties says no, it's running in Win10 default mode. I haven't used it lately since the summer is more worthy of attention and the kids are on holiday, but I notice no problems so far!

Thanks, Tom.

Well it's been working the last couple of days anyway. Funnily enough I forgot to run it as admin when putting in the current activation code so got an error that it hadn't written correctly to the registry (it had done so previously so that's not the issue). I am currently running it under Win 7 compatibility mode and as admin. Not sure if any of these things are why it's currently working or not... I also have all available hotfixes applied (though have on all attempts, so no change there).

I think the reason I see two licences listed is because after the first time it failed ("Activation limit exceeded") I imported the licence from my old machine (thus I had first activated it independently, and then transferred a license). Autodesk told me this is not a problem though.

Which exporters are you using? The old FSX ones, presumably, or do any of the newer P3D ones function correctly? Either way, am sure we work the same, i.e. develop in 64-bit and export from 32-bit ;).

Presumably your Max is working right now (just checking that it wasn't a recent Windows update)?

Thanks again.

Robert
