hello i am new in this. I got the big problem with the fs tools i can get it in but it give me many error but nealy all windows are open after all the error but i stil need the animation window to open and the Lod and Export tool is there but nothing shown, im not sur if it should be so until you do somthing ? is ther any one how can say how to get 100 % working becaus i have seen so many ways to do it and also tryed some of them but stil error. becaus i need to be finish becaus i only got the trail version becaus i want to add some runway lights to an airport im working on. but i have paid for the model on turbosquid.com link:http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/runway-lighting-1-3d-model/425044

i have tryed to create 1 light and followed the info step from fsxsdk. doc but i mean it is hard to find out of becaus then you reed you get to a point and then you need a program or somting els then you click on the word an get some info of that and it is hard to keep things togeter to under stand it some times. so i would be hapy if any could say then you do this and this some times it is easyer to understand it in a nother way.

My plan was to keep the model as it is and only add the light Effect so it works like the default light in FS X so it only light up in night and so on. and then export it so it could get in to the Flight Sim so i could get starting to place it. i hope i havent to start from the start a gain.

Here is what i have done, started to go to Environment Kit\Terrain SDK folder), and then converted to DDS files, also using Imagetool. and placed the DDS in the Add-on Scenery/texture folder. then i load all 12 lights then i had to delete the 11 of them and so i only have 1 whit light. becaus i dont found out of the flightsim light!

Then i go to get the File Properties and entered FriendlyName, and for Value enter a suitable name for the model. Then click Add. Enter another property called Guid and enter a GUID into the Value field. and thats done then i could get longer becaus i dont understand the:
To export the model, make sure the format Flight Simulator Direct X File (*.X) is selected, no other model format will work. If the option Flightsim Model (*.MDL) is shown, do not use it, it has not been implemented in this release. then i think ??? which tool should i use to export ???

i would be hapy if any could help me get it finished so it could be placed in the simmulator. i would if i could give you the lights then you could try to create it to an file i could use in FS X. and as payment you could get it so you could use it by your self but as i have toold im not the owner of the light so. but i hope some one would help me.

Hi,

Your question was a bit confusing, but if I understand you correctly you have the model in 3D Studio and are at the point where you want to export it to FS.

From 3D Studio you indeed need to export it as a X file. That options is in the export menu if you installed the gamepack as instructed.

Afterwards you need to use XtoMDL to compile that X file into a MDL file. That is also explained in the SDK.

Yes i know im sorry but yes i want to export from 3ds max 9.
and i have tryed to go to the file folder -> export menu but i cant se any x file format only all other formats so ???
what can i have forgot..

please tel me how to set up the plug in menu so the fs tools work if that is what i need. i have tryed to do it in so many ways also as it should be (FS DSK dokument) but i dosent work. it seems that there are so many problems whit the new 3ds max 9. it is also just becaus i payed for the light, ther have been createt in that format! els i think i would use gmax but i realy want the light in that airport.

and what do you mean : That options is in the export menu if you installed the gamepack as instructed???

You need to install the FSX gamepack into 3D Studio, without that you can not export to the Flightsim X format. I am not behind my FS PC at the moment, but the SDK clearly tells you how to install this gamepack. You need to add the gamepack folder to the plugins (so something like that).

Well now i got the lod and export tool shown right but stil got all the error windows at start up. and error in the export tool then i try so it is stil not good! what can the problem be i have set the hole SDK folder in to 3ds Max plug in folder. in the program i have set the 3rd party plug-in to C:\Programmer\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\3DSM7\Scripts. and i hoped it worked becaus it was diferent but still error i cant find the problem!! i dont know it it should be set to the C:\Programmer\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\3DSM9\Scripts to work but in the fs dokument it was showed to max 7 and if you try 3DSM9\Scripts insted it dosent work in lod and export tool.

Here is from the Max script listener:

Hi,

Maybe somebody with more 3DS experience will join this discussion. But as far as I know:

  • You should not copy the whole SDK into the 3DS Max folder.
  • You should load the gamepack that matches your version of 3DS Max. So load the 7 version if you use 3DS Max 7 and load the version 9 if you use that version.
  • Link to the folder as instructed in the documentation.
  • Copy the XtoMDL.exe from the Max7 to the Max9 plugin folder, because there is a bug in that EXE file.

hello a gain i have tryed and tryed but it just dont want to work. i have re instaled the SDK many times but it dosent help. i dont know what to do and the time is goeing and i got 23 days left with 3ds max 9 then its over. Then my money to the runway lights are spendt on nothing becaus i dont have 15000kr = about 2000 EUR to the 3ds max 9. I dont understand why microsoft dont ceate a new tool there work whit out copy the old file in to the new and so on!

No, I don't use 3DS Max myself, I use GMax which is free.

If the objects you bought are in the 3DS format you could try to import them in GMax as well.

From the few times I helped people with 3DS Max, I know it was very easy to install the gamepack. Just go into the preference and point to the folder where the gamepack is in the SDK. Given the fact that MS stopped with the development of FS, there will be no new gamepack with a correct XtoMDL file. But copying one file is not that hard.

Just another thought, are your decimal settings so that the dot is the decimal character? That is required for the gamepack, in Denmark the comma symbol will be the default setting.

yes it seems simpel to copy one file it was also what i have done i dont know what the problem is. maby becaus i use XP i dont know if there is a diference. but i know that i got captainsim boeing 757-200 and 300. there was an sound problem at xp but no problem on vista. then i found out that thee was an registration error and then i had to get an sound program cald ableton. and get the trail and the only thing i need was the registration file corectet in windows. so i dont know if it somthing like that there is the problem becaus the icon in the 3ds 9 dont look like the ons from the manual in the 3ds max 9 section.

Now i have tryed gmax and open 3ds format and i can open the file you told, so now i hope i can get it working !

well i have now tryeid but cant export it to mdl file format it gives me error it say it should be a 32 lewter with 4 - but it is but it fail. why is it so stupid im pist off. why shold it be so hard to get a thing in to that simulator. i think it was easyer to get the model in as it was createt and i only nead to get it in to the simulator so it could be placed. becaus i got a lot of corection whit the other object in the simulator before the airport is finish.

Hi,

Not sure which error message you mean, but did you set a GUID and friendly name? This can be done with the LODandNameTool from the FS Tools menu.

yes i have done it like it should be an i also open the oil rig to se if it was corect and as i can se it is right set up.

i got a picture of the error in the the file.

Can you check the File Properties (in the file menu). Under the custom tab you should see the GUID that has been set. It sounds like the value is not correct. I have never seen that happening when using the LODandNameTool.

Hi,

If you open the GMax file I send you and try to export that to MDL, do you still get the same errors?

In that case it seems something with your machine. So I would check:

  • if you have the decimal character set to dot instead of comma
  • if you have the .NET 2.0 framework installed
  • if you have the VC2005 runtime files installed
  • if you have the latest DirectX 9 installed

With that it should all work fine.

and yes stil got the problem and i think it my be:
if you have the decimal character set to dot instead of comma.
where do you find it in a menu or what.

yes i found out how to do an i have exportet the file from yesterday

ok then i have to find out how to get the night effect so threre is some light.

The dot as decimal character is a Windows settings, you find it in the regional settings of the control panel.
