• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

3DS Max - multiple objects into 1 UVmap

Hi everybody

I'm sorry i tried to use the search but the keywords "uv map", uv map, "UV" all didnt work simply because the search deletes the UV away because it says its to short :(

So sorry to bother you with a question which might have been asked 1000 times before. I am trying to build a manchester terminal building. This is my absolute first try in modeling for the flightsim.

Here a slideshow of the renders i made quickly:
http://img182.imageshack.us/slideshow/player.php?id=img182/8269/1198504034six.smil
(ignore the ground texture, that was just for the modelling)

You see those green cubes, I want to texture those. But to save polys i created them as seperate objects. Now how can i get these gates on the same UV texture like the main building?

Another question i had was if the thing will affect the performance. The buidling has about 400 polys and the texture file is 512x512 pixels, and has about 250kb (can i get that any smaller?)

Thank you for your help and merry christmas to everybody,
Stefano

Hi,

I am not sure if I understand your question. Do you have trouble in making the texture or is the problem in mapping it?

It should not be so difficult to add another piece of texture if you still have some space on your texture sheet. And after that the mapping should not be different from the mapping of the rest of your terminal.

About the texture size, using only one 512x512 texture for this building seems quite optimal to me as already. For use in FS you might want to compress it by making a DDS version.

Ok i got everything working now, and i have everything textured.

I was also able to put it into the flightsim, but there the whole thing was just green. I guess the texture doesnt get mapped onto the model.

Where is the error? BGL file, .x file, texture(BMP or DDS?) or the MDL file?

Thanks for your help,
Stefano

If there is no texture appearing on the model, make sure the converted texture .bmp is located in the texture folder of your scenery. 3DSmax does not export the texture with the model. You must manually place it there. If the building shows up white after that; make sure that the texture is in the right format.

Hope this helps,

John

I think the problem is the path exported within the MDL file out of Max. I tried to change the name, put it as DDS instead of BMP, placed BMPs in every possible folder i could think of. But it just appears white or green depending on what color i set the diffuse color.

Please help me.. ;)

Thanks,
Stefano

PS: If it helps i can upload the max file here...

Hi Stefano,

There are no paths stored in the MDL file, only the texture name. By default FS looks for the texture in the texture folder that belongs to the scenery folder where you BGL is placed. If it is not found there it will look in the main texture folder as well. But for custom textures it is always advised to put them in the local texture folder of your project.

Ok thanks. I'll mess around with the texture more later. Now i have to texture the second terminal. here a little render in case you are interessted:

I tried everything... i am seriously getting frustrated here seems like i am some kind of an idiot... :/

image.php

Thats how it looks when i export it and look at it in flightsim.

And these are pretty much all the settings i have set in my 3ds max:

Please guys help me, its really frustrating :(

Thank you,

Hi,

Maybe a stupid question, but are you using a FSX Material on your object instead of a standard material?

The problem whit 3ds you probably have is the FSX Material, open the Material editor than look at the point where you select FSX Material it may be set to Bitmap, the only thing you need to do is hit the arrow saying ( Go to parent ) that will set it back to FSX Material.

save the bmp as DDS in fsx

Hoop this will help
