• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.

3ds Max Users; 'Create Selection Set' tip

I have started using 'Create Selection Set' quite a bit now. Great for creating a hide-list so you can work on only panel parts, select all except the pilot and things for a 'interior' cabin model export, etc. But I didnt know how in the world you delete a list or modify it. I had been adding lists with no way I knew of to delete lists or modify them. Its easy enough to create one, but how in the world do you delete one or modify it? All you have is the slot to enter a new list.

Today I figured I would read up on it. Perhaps there is a 'hidden' little menu thing that works it. And behold, there is... A really cool, complete menu popup thing that has a button for it right next to the 'Create Selection Set' slot.

I wanted to share this with you model makers that use Max and are dealing with Sets of parts constantly to rework things (like panlels and 3d gauges, etc), exporting select parts for testing, etc etc etc...

'The Clicky Button' Hidden from Sight....

This is the editor button that brings up the Menu for Create Selection Set. Has some brackets and a pencil. The pencil is not animated. So do not expect it to move around when you click it. Its not advanced like our flight plane models.

The Amazing Menu thing!

This is the handy dandy worlds most awesome Selection List Editor command center where you can change parts of the Universe with just a clicky.... Beware, it doesnt double ask you things when you make edits. You click something and its done. Done.... No going back.

Just wanted to share that.

Bill of the gray eyebrow people...

Note above, I made use of a term 'create a 'hide' list'.... You're like, what?? Create selection set, you mean...

Well here is a tip. You want to hide the pilot (and maybe some other things) to export your Interior model.
1. Select the parts you want to 'not select'.
2. Create Selection List.
3. With parts selected, tap Control / I and that inverts your selection. Now just export selected... You invert your selection of the small amount of parts and done.

You 'could' just select every dang single part in the plane except the ones you do not wish to export. I see the purpose in that option. This just seems easier. So much you might forget, as there are BILLIONS and BILLIONS of parts... but if you just have a few that you are hiding from the exporter system, then why not keep it simple. My humble tip of the day.

Just for completeness, Bill, Gmax also let you both create and edit Named Selection Sets. The menu to find this is Edit/Edit Named Selections Bill Leaming had a sticky thread on this for years and I always found the tool invaluable.

Kinda sad to think I am a decade or more behind the times.... :S

I was actually going to post the question on here 'how' to edit the Select Lists. I just couldnt figure out how it was done. I decided to do a search on it and found out about the button for it before I posted the question here.

I am still afraid to touch the 'Groups' system. I have heard of nightmares of that....

Groups are better left alone, ‘tis true, but with Max there are also Layers which some recommend and use a lot. I’m too steeped in my Gmax ways yet!

Bill, thanks for your post. It reminds me again just how many ways there are in GMax/Max to "skin a cat..." I've always used this to get to that sub-menu, but never even thought of clicking on the little icon {abc} on the top menu bar! Either method will open the selection set editor sub-menu... :teacher:
