• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 3ds MAX

Hi there,
I have used Gmax for modelling up to now, but got hold of a copy of 3DS Max 7, and want to find out can I use 3ds Max 7 to model for FS2004, what do I need to export to FS2004 , and does the Gmax addons also work in 3ds Max?

Thanks,

Jakes

There is not a "simple way" to export from Max7 for FS2004. You would need to install and use the Pandasoft .X file generator, and then use MakeMDL.exe to load the .x file(s) and compile the actual model.

I use Max8 exclusively for FSX modeling, as there's no real advantage to doing things the "hard way" for FS2004... :D

You could use Max for building and mapping the model - all those lovely modelling, mapping and unwrapping tools they keep telling us about...! Then use the BFF script to get the model into gmax for animation and exporting.

Some modellers used to use this route a lot.

Or export the model to 3DS format and then import into gmax. One word of caution is to not export animated parts as these will import into gmax with some oddities. I should know, the Bell 222 I am working on was designed in Max and exported to gmax using BFF and the 3DS format...lets just say that alot of animated parts had to be reanimated:eek:

jay! sounds like too much trouble for fs2004. I am not that good of a modeller, so 3dsmax will not give me such a big advantage then :(

Thanks for the help!

have a great day!

Actually, Max7 can be of some benefit. I work the opposite direction for FS9 models...

I do all the modeling in GMax, but export selected objects, save the exported .X files so I can load in Max, then use Max's rendering system to generate "baked textures" for use in GMax...

Texture baking is the one reason I keep looking for a legit copy of Max. Some day...!

That is the primary 'nice' feature of Max is adding high realism shading and all to your textures (texture baking). Some of the newer 'features' and tools of Max are up in later editions, like Max 2009, (separate from Max 9).

Rendering is another thing, similar to Baking. You can render parts in quick render, nicely, and then immediately apply the texture (via screenshot) straight to a parts sheet, and back to Max and map it to the part.

If you can switch between them swiftly, then you are good to go and will have some nice enhancements to your work.

Euroastar,i am having trouble getting animations to work, from what you say "animated parts" are these such items like flaps, doors, undercarriage etc...im trying to get a radar to rotate 360' continuously on a moving ship within fs2004,looks and works great in 3dsmax but when exported as Xfile then converted into Aircraft MDL the radar dont rotate.
Should i export it a a stationery object in Gmax and animate it in there before exporting.
hope ive explained ok.
