• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi,

Could I ask a small favor to somebody who has 3ds max installed? I am looking for a test object to improve the 3DS file format support of modelconverterx. So hopefully somebody can make a quick model and save it to the 3DS format.

I am looking for a simple scene with 3 animated cubes. If possible one with a translation key frame animation, then another one that is linked to this animated object and is moving up and down. And finally one cube with a rotation animation.

Thanks!

Eeeks.. Id better let someone else do that. Ive only just started on Max and havent done scenery style animations that are FSX pure.

If you just want basic spins, 0-100 key frames, I can do that. But no code.

Also, do you need FSX materials attached or just regular materials, for the sake of who ever puts it together.

Also, we have several versions of Max now Arno. Do you mind using 2012? I think most people are using M9.

Hi,

The 3ds format can't store all those fsx specific settings anyway, so just some quick keyframe animations should be fine.

The 3ds max version should not matter either. The 3ds format is old and has not changed recently. All versions of max can write it, afaik.

Send from my phone using Tapatalk, so excuse the short sentences and possible typos

Ok... One block making an up and down motion on top of another block that moves along a arched trek, with a third block on the side, unconnected, that is rotating, 3DS Format, Max 2012.

Thanks a lot, now I have some object to play with :)

Let me know if you need it adjusted.

The blocks should be about 20 feet in size. I figured you were the scenery guru, so these could be house sized things. No materials are attached. If you need some FSX materials attached, just let me know. No mapping either.

Speaking of that... Do you think its possible to find a way to import Materials from a model into 3DS?

Bill

Hi,

I imported the object in gmax to have a quick look. I think it is perfect for what I want to test now.

About the materials. You can store basic material information in the 3ds file, so texture name, colors, etc. But not all the fsx specific material settings.

It would be interesting to see if comments stored in a part of 3ds max end up in the 3ds file. Then maybe some more animation information can be transferred. But I doubt that will work, might be worth a test ;)

Man, that would be awesome.

One would need for the parts to not weld together in things like landing gear assemblies.

Once again, thanks for the file. I think I got it working. The animation seems to be working fine as well.

I'll try to find some more sample objects to test with before I put the 3DS importer in the development release of ModelConverterX.

Hi,

I found some more simple test objects for now and since these still have bugs I think I better first try to solve these before trying an aircraft :). But as a final test an aircraft would be perfect of course.

On a side note, could anybody make another simple test scene. I want to check smoothing of objects. So if possible just two cylinders next to each other, one with smoothing and one without.

Arno,

I created 4 cylinders, all Editable Polygons, no Materials attached, no animations.

1. Standard Smoothing (untouched)
2. Zero Smoothing (none whatsoever)
3. Full 100% Smoothing with endcaps blending in showing no edges visible
4. Smoothing at standard 30% Auto Smooth Modifier.

These have zero 'turbomesh' or 'Iterations' on them. Just regular, stock cylinders.

Formats in X, Max, and in FSX MDL.

Arno, Don't forget that there are loads of free 3DS/.max etc.... objects on Turbosquid.com that you can download and test. :)

Yes, I found some on turbosquid already, but it is not always clear if problems I see with them are by design or not. So sometimes it is useful to know exactly what is modeled.

Thanks bill, will check them.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the test object, but they are not in the 3DS file format. And that is the format I want to test.

I do not have 3DS Max myself, else I would not ask for test objects :)

Thanks bill.

Found a better solution as well by now, I am downloading the 30 day trial of 3ds max, so then I can fiddle around to make test objects myself.
