• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Doesn't this tell you something?

Don
Gee how could have been so stupid?
I should go back to my back to my old method, instead of trying to get an explaination from you!!!!
But then again Im dreaming.

Thanks for nothing.

Thanks for nothing

You are being very rude.

Obviously it failed to load because it wasn't an FS8 or FS9 model

a-1j_skyraider.zip from Flightsim.com clearly states it is, quote, "FSX SP2 Acceleration Douglas A-1J Skyraider"

Why didn't you read the error message?

Hey wbunnell,

Why the rude attitude?
I think you owe gadgets an apology.

When all else fails, read the user's manual.
The error message you got is simply reminding you of what you should have read in the third paragraph of the "Please Remember" section at the top of the SAMM users manual where it clearly states:

"Static Aircraft .mdl Maker ("SAMM") will convert just about any FS8 or FS9 flyable or AI aircraft into a FS9 scenery model."

Now it can be confusing at times to know which aircraft are native FS8 / FS9 aircraft, and how to go about verifying which version a particular model was made for has been discussed in the SAMM forum in several threads.

If you don't want to use the search function to find those threads, you can simply believe SAMM when it warns you that the aircraft you are attempting to convert is ”Not a FS8 or FS9 mdl file".

Hope this helps. :)

If I had the A-1J Skyraider, I could have read the in the read me,BUT, I used the A-1H, nothing in the readme, SORRY.

"Doesn't this tell you something?" With all the error messages included, that statement says as I read it says, can't you read? Even thou the Manuel doesn’t elaborate on the FS8 or FS9 mdl error.
Regardless, I’ll have to say translating, a written sentience, is extremely difficult.
My translation was wrong.

Even thou the Manuel doesn’t elaborate on the FS8 or FS9 mdl error.
The third paragraph on page 1 of the manual states ("SAMM") will convert just about any FS8 or FS9 flyable or AI aircraft into a FS9 scenery model. Underlined text on the second page states SAMM will not convert aircraft models developed specifically for FSX or for FS2000 or earlier. You were complaining that SAMM wouldn't convert a designed-specifically-for-FSX model!

Keep getting Error Message, ”Not a FS8 or FS9 mdl file.”
The error message seems self-explanatory. How much clearer could I have made it?

I should go back to my back to my old method, instead of trying to get an explaination from you!!!!

And you are complaining about sarcasm?????

I think most users of my FREEware would categorize my support as exceptional. But, of course, there are always exceptions. Since you say you have an alternate method for converting flyable models to scenery, perhaps you'd be happier using it.

Dear wbunnell,

I imagine that most SAMM users, myself included, have recieved that error message at some time using an aircraft we thought was FS8 or FS9, and I think Don has used that same response for most people asking about the error message, and depending on their responses, the technique for verifying which FS version an aircraft .mdl was made for has been discussed by Don in this forum. As far as I was concerned, and as Don pointed out to you, the error message told me all I needed to know.

Given your history of being thankless, uncooperative, and rude, I don't think Don would have been afraid to say "can't you read?" if that had been his intent. I think that given your question about that particular aircraft, and the resulting error message you recieved, Don's response was not only appropriate, but also gave you the opportunity to laugh it off along with everyone else who would read this thread and enjoy a good giggle over an obviously humourous response which answered your inquiry perfectly.

So why not laugh it off?
And, why not apologize to Don for being rude?
C'mon, it will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :)
Here, you can simply cut and paste this:

Hi Don,
You're right, the answer to my question about the error message should have been as obvious as the nose on my face. I'm sorry for mistaking the intent of your response. Thank you for all of your hard work not just on SAMM, but on your other FREEware products as well. Keep up the great work!

Regards

Dear wbunnell,

Are you kidding me?

You couldn't even cut and paste the lousy apology to Don, and yet I'm supposed to search for something on your behalf because you have a problem understanding why you get an error message that advises you that you are attempting to convert a non-FS8-FS9 .mdl? :(

Maybe you can post a question in the regular forums on how to tell which version of FS an .mdl is made for, or maybe you can use MCX to convert the FSX aircraft to an FS9 aircraft.
That said, as far as I'm concerned from now on you're on your own mate.

If you can't figure out what is or isn't an FS8 or FS9 .mdl, you'll just have to simply trust the error messages SAMM gives you, or go back to your old method of making static models.

Don,

a good opportunity to say thank you for picking up and solve all my findings with AIFP from the early beta times until today :)

@wbunnell

I am astounded at your attitude.

Don (gadgets) has written and made this utility available to you free of charge. There is nothing in it for him to do this (quite clearly, as you are demonstrating)

Ask yourself the following:
- Do you think it is valuable for developers to offer tools to you for free?

- Do you think your conduct on this thread encourages them to continue to do this?

Your language powers extend to rudeness and sarcasm, but apparently not to reading an error dialog, or a help file!
Do they extend to apologies?

@Don, thankyou for making our development job easier and more enjoyable with AIFP, SAMM and Fencebuilder

Since wbunnel is clearly finding your tool useful, I'll offer an unauthorised thankyou on his behalf.
I will, however, leave him to formulate his own apology, once he has digested this thread a little more thoroughly.

MR GMAN,
I guess you got the right idea. Don’t answer the Post, go after you can’t find one so you try to make the problem, ME, instead of finding a post referencing the FS8 or FS9 bgl.
Now, I’m still waiting for a POST referencing the FS8 or FS9 bgl. If you can’t find one don’t feel bad, I couldn’t find one either. If you find one please enlighten me.

My feelings are that this has gone on long enough. I don't think anyone would find a continuation (or even what's gone on so far) useful. wbunnell has apologized - which I accept.

Incidentally, wbunnell, there is at least one other thread in this forum dealing with the "only FS8 and FS9' error message. Several others discuss the issue. Unfortunately, the search algorithm for the forum makes them difficult to find (3-letter words are ignored). But, if you scan the titles (there's only three pages) and do a cursory examination of those that look like they might be applicable, you'll find the ones I'm referring to.

Here's the explanation you would have received had you responded initially with something along the lines of "I still don't understand". Microsoft introduced a new aircraft compiler/design criteria with FSX. Compiled-for-FSX aircraft model files have a very different format than their FS8/FS9 predecessors. AIFP does not "understand" the FSX format (it might next year). As I recall someone else mentioning, if you want to convert FSX models, you'll have to use Arno's ModelConverterX.

To all those that expressed suppport fror me/SAMM, thanks very much. It's appreciated.

Don
