• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 A question concerning texturing

Im using FSDS for FS9. I was wondering if someone could maybe shed some light about texturing . I understand the basics. I have a hangar
that has a somewhat dome shaped top. And I have a real picture
for the texture of the actual hangar. In FSDS when I use the texture program it doesnt allow me get the actual dome shape without
it be squared off. And then I end up with the real life back ground
as part of it as well. Is there a way to say like trace out what
parts of the texture I need applied that arent in the form of a square?
Does any of this make sense what Im asking ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Mike

Texturing

Hi Mike,

Be nice if there were some screen shots. If you still have my email address then you could send them, so I could at least look at the textures you have and the fsc file if you like. If you don't have it send me a pm. It's up to you.

Hi john

Thanks for responding. I wasnt able to post a pic since Im work
when post this mesage. Will send to ya tonight. thanks

Mike

Actually, you would probably be better off loading the image into something like Photoshop and manually using "skew" and "distortion" to square up the roof... ;)

Texturing

Hi Mike,

After our discussion I thought that I would detail the procedure.

The technique I use for awkward shaped objects in FSDS is

1. Use a backdrop picture of the object.
2. Create a shape, a tube or box, then add points front and back in sufficient number that you will be able to mold the shape around the object in the picture or part of the picture.
3. I usually add a flat polygon as well because the tube/box sometimes becomes distorted.
4. Or create flat polygons for front and back. Make the shape then create individual polygons to join up the points for the sides.

I have used this procedure to create vehicles as well as buildings.

Thanks for the pictures you sent, your hanger looks quite brilliant.

Have you tried just using the polygon texturing mode? That will let you draw a texture definition that is not the shape of a rectangle as long as the particular polygon shape you are trying to texture is not a rectangular shape.

No I haven't tried that yet. In fact I never knew about that, so I will have to look into it. Thanks anyway.

It's not the easiest function to use but it sometimes works well for those really oddly shaped parts that won't take a texture very well.
