• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

AB boundary file conflicts

Recently I ran into an issue with FS crashing. Specifically, while on approach to KBOI it would crash to desktop everytime I tried. I did some testing and it appeared to only do it during the day, at night it worked fine. At dusk, it crashed as well.

Now, I went thru a process of elimination and found two files that when added to the scenery folder were causing a crash. They are AB916160.bgl and AB917160.bgl. They happen to be geographically next to each other as scenery bgl files.

I opened LWMviewer and loaded both files together. What I found was odd to me. The Airport boundary for KBOI appeared in BOTH files. Given that the boundary was in two separate files located in the SAME scenery foler, both VTP Layer 7 polys I figured this was the cause of the crash. I loaded Sbuilder, imported each file and removed KBOI from both and then exported each as their own name, ie AB916160 and AB917160 and placed these newer files in the scenery folder, and removed the original AB files that caused the issues. In addition I loaded the AB916160.bgl and traced the poly at KBOI and then exported ONLY that new poly as a separate BGL giving it the name KBOI-fix.bgl. I tried to loaded the three together in the original scenery folder but I still get the crashing. When I remove the KBOI-fix file, FS then loades fine but I get no boundary for KBOI.

Any ideas why this may not work, or any ideas why MS would have two files with the same AB boundary poly?

Interesting find, I see that the flatten is in both flatten files as well. I don't think having duplicate backgrounds presents any problem per se, since it is only crashing at day I wonder if it is somehow connected to texture loading? Might try splitting the AB poly into two files, one for each of the LOD8 cells and see what that does.

Hi fred.

If you are using FS2004, did you also use the FS9.1 update from MS? I ask because there was a crash related to Airport Backgrounds with FS9 that was corrected by the update.
