ACES Tools setup in 3ds max

This is about the 5th or 6th time that I setup fsx and its SDK, but I was never so stuck like now.

On my new PC I have Vista 64 bit and 32 bit on 2 seperate HDD's. That's kinda nice because I can now run SP2 and Acceleration as seperate test systems on 32 and 64 bit - goodto compare fps and visuals.

Anyway, that's not the point. My problem is setting up 3ds max on Vista 32 bit again. It won't run on Vista 64 bit so I only use it with 32 bit Home Premium - but I just cannot get the SDK to work.
Last time all I needed to do was creating a new entry in "3rd party plugins" under "customize/system paths" and choose the SDK/3dsm9/plugins folder. Doing this results in max showing the Aces Tools but giving me the following error if I want to run them:

"Max Script - This tool is currently not supported"

I cannot believe we have to learn things all over again just because we get new PCs... :banghead:

The 3DSMax 9 tools in the SDK is hosed. Use the 3DSMax 7 tools.

(If I remember correctly, it's been stated that Microsoft forgot to "sign" the Max 9 tools? - or something like that).

I used the Max9 tools on my old Vista 32 bit Computer, so I guess it should work on the new one too (same windows). Max7 gave me an error that this version was not compatible.

You need to swap XToMdl from the 3DSM7 kit ,then add the pathway to the 3DSM9 and choose a file in the plugins folder like SetupAcesRoot so a \ is added to the path
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\3DSM9\Plugins\

Still no success. I copied the XToMDL.exe from 3dsM7/plugins to 3dsM9/plugins and again edited the system path to ...Modeling SDK/3DSM9Plugins/ - still I get the error "Tool is currently not supported".

I can't believe I'm stuck on this. :o

Now I even copied the complete 3DSM9-folder from my old Computer to the newly installed SP2-SDK folder. All files are the same, also 3dsmax system paths are named correct to the current location - still no luck.
I also did not forget to change the german dezimal settings (,) to the american settings (.) - still no luck.
For some mysterious reason max tells me the tools were not supported. :(

Well, let's just forget about all this. If you can't find a solution for a stupid system go for a better system!

I suddenly remembered this thread and thought it might be possible to actually install 3dsMax 2008 32 bit AND 64 bit both on my Vista 64 bit platform. And guess what? Both run without problems. SDK obviously only on 32 bit version, but (don't ask why!) there all Aces Tools just work perfectly well! :):)

Sometimes it's all about patience...

Thanks for the help, guys! ;)

Cobber, what version of Max are you running and what does the error message state? Are the ACES-tools even showing up?

Fortunately - since the topic is more than 5 years old - I have soled the problems since.
Just make sure to follow the advise in this thread and restart Max after you added the plugins into the correct folder.
