• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Adjusting Longitudinal dynamic stability ?

Looking in the flight_model.cfg, I see no adjustable parameter that specifically sets Longitudinal dynamic stability.

Can anyone tell me what I need to change to affect this dynamic stability, without messing up any other aspects of the plane's Aerodynamic behavior. ?

Is there any FS2020 SDK ? documenation yet on the [AERODYNAMICS] parameters in the flight_model.cfg ??

I assume you mean (in effect) pitch stability. There are at least 2 parameters that control this. One is pitch damping which is a negative value for more stability and the other is a more coarse control in the Flight_Tuning section of the same file (flight_model.cfg file) named aptly pitch stability. There are many other params which also affect this but the two mentioned are the main tweaks.

My understanding is that there are two type of Longitudinal Stability . Static & Dynamic.
Of the two parameters by different names that you mention - Pitch Damping & Pitch Stability. I assume that its the Pitch damping is the Longitudinal DYNAMIC stability.

I am trying to get the plane to be less DYNAMICALLY unstable, and act more towards the Critical Damped response.

Geoff, although I haven't read the above posts yet, I guess Pitch Damping = Static, while Pitch Stability ( overall ) would classify as long term, dynamic ( phugoid ) stability...

All I want is to be able to make a C150 or C182 have something close to "Critical Damping" as opposed to being Highly Dynamically Unstable.
Meseds about with all the visible Pitch parameter, but none seem to alter the Gain -- just the Frequency if you start putting in Crazy values.

What chance does the standard MSFS GA autopilot stand in controlling a plane that is so incorrectly unstable, and what is the point in trying to alter AP Pids, to try compensate for an inaccurately unstable aircraft.

Anyone developing GA planes like to comment -- or tell me what I am doing wrong - I can fly both the C150 & C172 (+ other) in RL for decades, and they behave extreeeeeeemely different to those aircarft in the Sim (at 2nd & 3rd Updates)
