• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi guys,
I quite finished an aircraft carrier in 3dmax.
I would like to use her in fs2004 as scenery and in fsx as model.
Which are the parameters in terms of the number of polygons and what is the best in terms of export format for later use modelconverter?
regards
Cobby

Hi,

I'm not not familiar with 3dmax but .mdl is often good. From modelconverter you can export to FSX mdl and also to fs9 as scenery. Bear in mind you need fs9 gamepack with make mdl.

regards

well:
to export
question
1.: I have to change all in mesh
2.: I have to divide in LODs
3.: than export or in 3ds or in obj format to fs2004 or fsx: it depend on polygons numbers right?

to add movement or lights effects:
question
4.: how can Add a radar antenna turning?
5.how to add light on the deck?
is it possible to export all the ship except radars lod and import only this Lod in GMAX ,add movements than export as a bgl to add with modelerconverter to the ship file?
regards
Cobby

for radar with animation look for "ACG tutorial-Rotating Radar scanner" is a PDF about radar for Fs9 and Fsx.
You need attach lights with the attach tool, MCX can do that and Gmax aswell.

thanks for the PDF...going to study
that means:
1. I can import Naval radars lod from the ship lods
2.animate the radars antennas
3.export as bgl
4.merge this bgl in the ship bgl using MCX
Right?

Ps.
which coordinate have I to use in the merge operation?

Why you want separate radar and ship??, why complicate the method
with the attach tool in Model conevertex, you will work with a Kind of coordinates, placing the lights in the x,y,z space.

In 3dsmax you will export to .x format, then use sdk tool xtomdl to create your mdl file. The 3dsmax version will matter, which version are you using?

@bob5568 : I'm using 3dsmax vers.9

the main question is:

If i'm going to export in 3ds or OBJ what I animate in 3dmax will be exported or not?

If YES than all is ok and will be easy to rotate a radar antenna If NO what I have to do?
regards

Do you have the sdk installed? You should be able to export directly using only the aces tools from 3dsmax9. You don't have to export to either obj or 3ds. If you don't have the aces toolbar showing you don't have the sdk installed. You can export your animations directly using the animation tool in the aces menu. Look at the aces drop down menu at the top of your 3dsmax screen, don't try to export using the file/export/ menu, just pull down the aces menu and use the animation manager, and then the export tool. You will be given a chance to add a guid and friendly name in that tool, and finally export.

I found this link from the wiki on fsdeveloper. It teaches you the long way, but it does work. In this method you export a .x file, and then convert it using xtomdl. While you are in the export tool, however, look at the export directly to mdl shortcut. It works, and saves some time.

I have found on my computer D:\Programmi\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\3DSM7\Plugins
I exactly followed all the procedure to add aces tools on 3dmax but when starting again the application it gives me multlipe errors saying for instance FSModelExp.dle not compatible with 3dmax version....
what I have to do?

you should choose .../Modelling SDK/3dsMax9/plugins. Have you Acceleration ? if not you will have to take xtomdl file from 3ds max7 plugins to work. But you can work from Max9
