• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi all. I'm hoping someone can help me with a minor(ish) issue I'm having with FSX Planner.

I recently upgraded my system from XP to Windows 7, which involved a reinstall of all my programs, including FSX Planner.

After I'd installed the program into Windows 7 and ran it for the first time, I received a updates dialog box asking me to download an update to "add the AirlineCode.xml file.

I clicked install, but I then received an error message saying "The following update file could not be copied" and the filepath C:\Program Files\zBlueSoftware\FSX Plannerz\updates\AirlineCodes.xml, and the update fails.

The result of this is that the airline codes list is empty, and the colour-coded parking spaces do not appear. While this isn't a fatal issue, and assigning parking codes manually does work, it is mildly inconvenient, especially as I can't see what airlines are assigned to what spaces and what spaces are unassigned at a glance, as I could in XP, where I had no such problems.

Any ideas? I've tried reinstalling FSX planner, and this doesn't help
 
Sounds like a permissions problem with Win 7. Easiest way to avoid these occurring is to not install (anything) into the \Program Files folder, either of them.

If you uninstalled FSX Planner and reinstalled outside of the \Windows structure I'd be pretty sure errors like this would go away.
 
No non-Vista or Win7 program should ever be installed in that silly ..\Program Files folder...
 
Tried reinstalled on a different hard drive well away from any windows 7 stuff, and it doesn't help. Still getting the same error message, no matter where I install it
 
Speaking as someone with over 20 years in software design and development I can say that ALL well designed programs MUST go into C:\Program Files\ because that is how it has been designed by the operating system.

That many programmers out there still have the DOS & Windows 95 state of mind is just a pity. The Program Files directory is meant for storing installed applications and protecting them from unwanted modification.

Modern day operating systems DO have special directories to store user data as well as common data. Programmers should make use of those facilities and spare users from having to open their systems to installation chaos and security risks.

While FSX planner is a wonderful application, it lacks that concept of dividing user data, from common data and static data. Every time I start up FSX planner I have to reenter the BGL SDK directory and the last output directory because it never remembers it unless I run it as administrator which is a HUGE security risk.
 
I'm not disputing any of the "canon" you've described. In fact, it is entirely correct as long as we are discussing "state of the art" programs and such...

However, something you need to keep in mind is that many of the "official tools" released by MS/ACES were compiled as "command line programs," which makes such tools extremely problematic when run in the ..\Program Files paradigm...

Further, even FS itself was never updated enough to overcome all of the issues of "Permissions," "UAC," and so forth...

How many times have we read laments from ordinary simmers about how they "can't save changes to the aircraft.cfg file" or similar? This can all be avoided by not following the au courant "canon" for the latest incarnations of the operating system.

Hi,

I won't take sides here either. Just wanted to let you know I have FSX and the SDK installed in the program files and although at the beginning I experienced trouble as well, I now have none anymore whatsoever. Problem is that I do not know anymore what exactly I did to remedy it.
 
I certainly wouldn't want to get involved in a topic like this, either. Except to say that many of us who run FS have had to learn how to master the OS, rather than let the OS master us.

Here's your answer for WIN7x64

Run FSXPlanner.exe in (Windows XP) compatability mode. Also, my installation is in the root drive (C:).
