• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

FSX Airport custom terrain

I'm currently working on an airport with ADE and GPE and all is going well. Looking ahead, I'm wondering how people create some of the great terrain we see in the "islands" between taxiways, runways and such. Generically, this is where the airport background shows up. I've seen some airports, however, with much better textures and, in some cases, 3d stalks of grass (!)

I know how to do a nice texture for these areas with GPE. I was wondering what other suggested methods there are, especially those that accommodate seasonal changes.

Maybe you are asking the wrong question???

Nothing says an airport background has to be a (for lack of a better term) single polygon. It can be multiple polygons, all of the same elevation. And they should not intersect, I believe. The areas "inside (?)" the polygons can then be something else. Kind of like a donut's hole.

Flightbeam's Denver would be a good example where the airport's elements (runway, aprons, taxiways) are set to a flatten and the land not of those types gets handled in a different manner.
 
Huh, somehow I hadn't thought of trying that. For some reason I thought it could be done by placing new flattens on top of the existing one, each set to a lower elevation, but I suppose that explains why this method never worked. I'll give your recommendation a try.
