• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Animated Helipad

ok I know they say that no hard surfaces can be animated in FSX, but they have working elevators on carriers. so is that not a hard surface?? I want to make a Helipad in a building that when you fly up to building it opens with retracting roof. then pad comes up, and once you shut down the Helicopter it retracts and the roof closes. and reverse for when you start the Helicopter back up. then once you fly away it closes. I know this is probably a pipe dream but would be pretty cool if anyone had some insight.

Hi ct3920.
Yes you can make an animated helo pad. I made a fun thing to land a helo on, it is like a Childs see-saw.
If you would like to see it go to this site http://hsquad.katuu.com/
And download H_Squad_BC_Base.

Now for the problems I see in your idea.

I am assuming you are using FSDS3.5 and working on FSX.

-Pad on roof …no problem.
-making the pad move up and down…no problem
-roof opening to let pad down and then closing…no problem in theory

-Problem one, setting conditions for the animation. This can be done with FS9 not FSX
-You would likely need to use radio freq to do it, not the engine start and stop.

-I am NOT sure that the length of the animation could be made long enough to get the helo landed then down in the roof and back up again there is a limit to the total length and that I think will be the biggest problem.
(Just rethinking that last statement. if you use the radio freq. to turn the animation on and off then perhaps the length issue may not mater, I will test that tonight.)

But very cool idea and one that is worth messing with even if it is just to learn.

well I have never done animated scenery before so a good tutorial might help. anyone know where I might find one?

ok I did the tutorial and everything came out fine. now I did the animations in the scenery and they are not showing up @ all. I see the building but the animated parts do not show.. not sure what I missed.

You have two animated parts to sliding roof and the platform.

I would suggest that both parts have key frame “0” set at is start potion.

-You have the roof closed and key frame 0 set…good
-next you open the roof and have key frame 100 set this will mean the roof moves from key frame 0 too100.
-next you have the roof still in the open position and key frame 500 set, this is good this will hold the roof open until key frame 500 and then you have the roof closed at key frame 600 so the roof moves from 500 too 600.

-Now that platform… you need to have it at its start position and set key frame 0.
-And still at its start position I would set key frame 100, this will keep it there until the roof is open then I would move the platform up and set key frame 200 hold it there by
-Next setting key frame 400 then move it back down and set key frame 500 then 600 so it stays there till the whole thing starts over.

This will still need tweaking but it will get you started.

“I have no idea on how to set triggers so its just repeating.”
Bad news in FSX we cannot set conditions…we can in FS9.

But in FS9 I do not know how to attach a helo pad. If one of the other guys pop in to help with that I think you can make a helo pad that will set still on the roof, you can land on it then turn on the animation with radio freq take a ride down into the building and back up again to take off…could be cool

Also give the tutorial “Animation Two moving Axis" a read.
