• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Animated waterfall?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask if anyone knows how to create an animated waterfall, like the Rainbow Falls in Hawaii which were part of World Update XIII or the waterfalls seen in some 3rd party addons like NZA´s Milford sound. Is there a way to use a video file as a texture like you can do in blender, or do you animate the mesh itself?

Cheers, Fabian

you just need a copy of 3ds max, than you can create the same Asobo did using animated materials
with Blender is still not possible (afaik)

The Victoria falls add on looks like some of the falls are an animated rotating cylinder with a water texture, which is totally achievable with Blender. Add plenty of spray effects and it might look good enough.

I'll look into that, It was something I also thought about, though I thought there must be a more elegant way to achieve this.

OK the rotating cylinder works, kind of, although it´s pretty limited because it only works for relatively small, strongly curved waterfall. I´d need a waterfall that falls pretty much straight down a cliff and gets wider as it drops down, but I have no idea how to do that. If you come up with a possible solution, I´d be glad if you shared it. Thanks again!

Someone made an animated luggage conveyor belt in Blender with bones, which I guess would be the same principle, but going down rather than along.

Worth a look https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/rigging-animating-conveyor-belt/603462/4
That looks promising, should also bei possible to scale the bones as they go down so the Spray of water becomes wider as it goes down. It's been a while since I worked with armatures, but I'll have to look into it, it seems the most flexible way to do it. Might also be possible to let the water flow ober crevices amd protruding rocks with this approach.
