• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Animation visibility range

Hi Jeffrey,

I have created animated windsock models with GMAX. Unfortunately, when they are triggered with SODE, their animation can only be seen within a range of about 300m. A friend of mine (Patrick) has reported to me the same problem with his animated flags.

You need to increase the bounding box of your model, for example by creating a big invisible 2d plane below ground level.

Thanks Jeffrey, with gmax I have placed a 300m*300m plane under the ground but the result is the same (the windsock is visible from distance but the animation stops at 300m).

When the windsock model is placed in the scenery library, the animation can be seen at any distance.

I haven't noticed this problem with the first release of SODE.

I have looked at Jörg windsocks. Their animations are visible at any distance, there is certainly an other trick to know.

Hi Jacques,
I already noticed your problem and checked my windsock with its parameter. To be honest, I do not have an idea what causes the problem.
Could you post your xml-file or send me a PM with it so that I can compare it with mine?
Jörg

I checked the xml-file and cannot find any problem in it. Perhaps the problem is simpler than we think at the moment and has nothing to do with SODE but with the general behaviour of FSX.
FSX shows small objects very late for me sometimes too late. Please check adding a 5m x 5m dummy cube under the earth so it is not visible in the scenery. This triggers however FSX to show the object earlier than before.
I used this trick for other small objects but perhaps the pole I use for my windsock solves the problem in my case.
Let me know if it works.
Jörg

Jörg, thanks for your reply, after a plane (see post nr 3) I've tried a box but it doesn't help.

The windsock remains visible at a great distance but the animation stops at about 300m away.

Problem solved (I don't remember how I can edit the title).

I have added a transparent box around the sock (and not below ground) and the animation can be seen at every distance now.

you got me on the right track, thank you !
