• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Are formal 3D design & coding courses worth the money & time?

So, thanks to the events of this year, it looks like I'll have a lot of free time over the next 6 - 12 months. I was therefore considering taking developing for FS (MSFS and maybe P3D) a lot more seriously than I have in the past. For years I've dabbled with my own creations, from airport/scenery design, to modifying aircraft 3D models and even a little XML gauge coding/modifications. All purely for personal use, so I've never shared anything. I'm comfortable with most of the concepts and development tools used, though mainly older versions 3DS MAX (v5 etc). I don't however have anything that resembles a repeatable/correct workflow, and my technical knowledge is somewhat sporadic. I only really know enough to make the simple creations/modifications I've done in the past.

As such, I've started to wonder if taking some sort of formal, online training course would be of any benefit. I understand that there is an immense amount of freely available learning material, but I'll admit to being a little lost when sifting through some of this. I do think a more structured, documented course may help me get a better grounding, at least until I "know what I don't know", so to speak.

So, are there any 3D modeling/content creations courses that people believe are worth while? Also, when it comes to coding for FS development (mostly aircraft development), would an XML or JS course be of any help or, is FS just to specific to justify it?

Maybe be getting a bunch of modeling/coding books and just working through them would be better?

Lastly, if people generally don't believe formal training is of much benefit for FS development, how do you best approach making the jump from noodling amateur, to a more serious and competent developer?

Thanks in advance guys.
