• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Attachpt error

Hello Arno!

MCX has come to the rescue for some old, old scenery files that I'm trying to convert to FSX format, but I've hit a snag with a couple of files.

Quick background; a friend made some lighthouses for Hawaii for me back in the FS9 era. For different reasons, I never got around to releasing the work. When FSX came out the FS9 style material (?) caused visual problems and the friend never got around to updating the files. I've since lost contact with him, as emails bounce back from a closed address.

So I am trying to convert the MDL files using MCX, both 1.2 and the latest dev. copy. MCX is doing a good job, as there are just a couple of spots still "black". But that's not what I'm writing about. In the work that was done there are a couple of MDL files with an attachpoint or two and I'd like to convert one or both to FSX format, so that I can set up a beacon to serve as the lighthouse light. But when I try to export I get an error from MCX, picture attached.

My modeling skills are quite limited, so converting the FS9 file to work with FSX type attach points would be ideal. One of the MDL files is attached.

Is this doable or should I fire up the modeling program and get the user manual printed out?

Hi,

The problem with that MDL file is that it only contains two attachpoints, but no geometry.

The crash you have is gone if you set the option in ModelConverterX to not have crash detection on the MDL. But then still XtoMDL does not convert it correclty.

I would have to check if with GMax or so you can make such MDL files in FSX, for FS2004 that could also not be done directly from GMax and required some "tweaking".

Thank you for your insight, Arno.

I think I know what needs to be done to achieve the goal in FSX. It's just doing it within the modeling program, which always turns out to be an adventure for me.

Like I said, I am not sure if the modelling program can export a MDL with only an attachpoint as well. For FS2004 you usually had to do some manually tweaking to get that working.
