• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

black textures

im using max 2012 and all of my textures are showing black in fsx despite no export error messages and the textures are the correct size and in the texture folder as dds files.

cant think why.

if i cheat and assign a pure colour to an object then no problem its the texture bitmaps that are showing black even though they look fine in max

noob

Two things to check for:

1. Make sure that the material used is a FSX material.
2. Make sure you apply the FSX material to your object.

they are definately fsx materials.

when you say apply to object . do you mean the apply material to selection button because i have not done this. im just so used to pressing the show in viewport in max which works fine for anything else including rendering.

noob

That is correct. Make sure you use the "Assign Material to Selection" with the object already selected in 3ds Max (make sure you are not in sub object mode).

yes i thought this would be the answer but ive now tried all that and still black textures
noob

Have you by any chance assigned a bump map to the FSX Material, but not actually created a bump map for the sim?

I thought you might have tried all that but reasoned that maybe you had overlooked something obvious, it can happen. ;)

I use 3ds Max 9 with the FSX Acceleration SDK so I really can't help you any further. Obviously running 3ds Max 2012 with the P3D SDK 3DS Max Tools must be a little different.

ive not got a bump map at all.

and the p3d export tools appear exactly the same as the fsx tools in max9. but appearences can be deceptive

ive gone back to a cube nowone 1024 1024 fsx texture bitmap applied saved as a dds put in to texture folder of aircraft and assigned to selected object in max .

its as basic as can be

noob

A basic thought...brought on because I have done it myself!

Do the texture file names match between what you assigned in Max and what you put in the texture folder?

yes they match because i simply took the exact textures and converted them to dds. so the names remained the same.

ive still not solved this issue.
