• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

Blender: cutting canopy frames out of the fuselage

Hi,
is there any simple way to cut out a canopy frame out of the fuselage in Blender?

This is how my model looks:

Now I have to cut out a part of the fuselage to become the actual canopy frame.

It should look like this in the end:
Gyroflug%20Speed%20Canard%20(%20OO-EMC%20)%20EBKT%202007%20(4).jpg

Is there any easy way how to do this?

Thanks in advance,

dave

Hi Dave,

depends on what you mean by "simple" :D I can't think of an easy way to achieve that rim on the canopy frame. It is not a simple cut-through, since it has an edge. You can try a Boolean modifier or the Knife Tool to begin with. Or, since you already have the window cutout as a template, use the inset tool (I) on the faces surrounding the border to get the outer hull of the frame right.. From then on, it's pretty much extrude and scale.

I don't know anything about Blender but even in Max this would not be an easy chore even with the Boolean function. I would probably duplicate the structure and the add vertices and edges hand cutting the sections around the canopy hatch. Then once cut I would animate the opening of the hatch. Then by carefully watching where the sections come together from repeated opening and closing, adjust vertices until you get a nice looking fit. I have spent hours working on things similar only to scrap it all and start again trying a different procedure. I'm not trying to discourage you but that's modeling regardless of the medium.
