• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

Hi,

I'm trying to create some sort of lattice for a bridge. For this I created the basic shape of the bridge's arc and some sort of 'stamp' that I merge into the scene, move it to the right place and then apply the boolean (subract) operator to cut out the holes. As you can see in the screenshot, it worked for the first cutout on the right, but for the 2nd cutout (on the left), too much was cut. Sometimes, depending on where on the bridge's arc I try applying the 'stamp', I get much weirder effects like parts of the 'stamp' remaining.

Does anyone know the solution to this (what I assume is a GMAX bug, or am I the mistake :)) ? Is there any better method to achieve this ?

If you should make one good element and attach then all the other copies and end to bend the whole object... maybe this is better ?

Hi José,

That was a quick answer! Although I am not 100% sure I know what you meant or how to apply this here, you gave me an idea. I merged the stamp, made it an array so I can stamp all locations at once, then connected them all using the 'Connect' Compound Objects operator and then only had to apply one single boolean operation and it looks good so far ! (Have to cut out other things at the ends but perhaps I can apply the same method.)

Hi,

Well, your bridge must have a certain amount of elements and each element is the the same. Once you have one good element, then you attach as much elements as needed until the bridge has his lenght. At this moment the bridge is rather flat than curved, so... Then you can apply a bend to the new composed object and make a curved bridge (you have to choose: X, Y or z axes). Simply select the object and choose for Bend ( a value in ...% positive or -...% negative value) in the rolout menu.

The bridge has a number of similar elements. What I showed in the screenshot was only the middle part between the two arches. The top cross-braces (?) must fit between these arches (which are not round). I had a look at the bend modifier. It seems to give the same 'cutting angle' at each end. This is not what I need. As the arch or the bridge has the shape of a poly line, at each kink there is a different angle between the two adjacent elements on the top.

I think I'll try re-creating the basic shape in a different way before I apply the 'stamps'. I did create the shape by creating two closed poly lines, extruded each and then uses the boolean modifier. I could create the shape w/o using the boolean modifier, so there would be fewer boolean modifiers in the process and I hope that helps. Otherwise, there are still a few other methods left, like doing segment by segment and merging them and removing the hidden polys.

I just dislike that GMAX makes it such a pain :mad: .
