• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Take a 20x20x20 box. Create tool (a tube). Punch a hole through the box all the way.

Now repeat this but at right angles to the hole you just created. I swear I did this a while back. Now I can't get the second hole. Warmingham tried and couldn't. Is there something we are missing?

Why specifically a tube? If you wanted just a hole, then wouldn't a cylinder work?
EDIT: Oops, that's the trouble with always clicking on 'new posts', I didn't realise this was in the FSDS forum -- I'm thinking in GMAX...

I guess Gmax calls it a cylinder where FSDS calls it a tube. Same puppy.

Nope. A 'cylinder' in Max/Gmax is topographically distinguished because it acts like a "solid," meaning there is no "interior." It is a closed vessel.

A "tube" is topographically distinguished because it is "hollow," meaning that there is an inner radius of vertices.

Even a "tube" with 1m outer radius and 0m inner radius will have vertices in the geometric center of the axis.
 
Interesting difference. Nevertheless I do not see any primitive called cylinder. FSDS only has 'tube'. My original question remains. Bob
 
We luddites use "tubes" ...... (which are cylinders in the Dark Side)

I repeated the experiment and had no problem.

Another thing you can do, if you just want to "punch holes" is to create your first tube (partname: tool) of a three sections. delete the middle polygons. Copy./paste and rotate/move the new part (tool.1) to where you want the second set of "holes" to be. Now, select BOTH tool parts, (tool and tool.1), JOIN the parts together, and make sure the now part is named "tool",

Seect the tool and box, CTRL-B, and Hopefully you should have all your holes drilled.

As long as the tool part does not intersect itself, you can actually create several "tool" parts, join all the separate parts (gmaxspeak: attach multiple), and create one boolean operation. I've used it to create, say a row of windows.

Unfortunately, the side effect is that you have a lot of point cleanup to do.

Alas, no. "Clean orphaned points" is for when you delete polygons and leave little points all over the place, by themselves, attached to nothing.

Boolean operations in FSDS are really 'dirty' affairs, attempted usually by only the hardiest souls, who take masochistic pride in spotting groups of unnecessary points close together, deleting them, and creating fresh polygons ... Some have been known to port the part over to gmax, perform shape merge or other operations on them and return them to FSDS. The creativeness of the FSDS modeller is shown in the many ways we toil to avoid booleans... :)

Even when dabbling in the Dark Arts I scrupulously avoid booleans! (Shape Merge is more convenient most of the time)
 
Bill Leaming.... I wonder if I've ever used any of your libraries?.... If they have been uploaded. Anyway... souds familiar.

Felix- I have no idea what shape model is. I need more time to study this stuff. But then, my hummie-do list is too long. I finsh 3 items, 4 are added! But then no one else has this problem, right? :) Bob

Here is a pic Bob, of a box with 4 holes all booleaned in FSDS of course. I should really have put your bell in but I put a blue sphere instead.
Made with a box and booleaned once.
Then copy and paste and rotate.
I had to flip some of the polygons and haven't quite finished it yet as you can see but that is a minor problem.
I sent you the fsc file in an email.
