• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS Bump/Normal Map Issues

I'm trying to change the bump map texture for a plane as the original textures had the exits and related body panels in the wrong spot. I am able to change the textures fine but when I edit the bump map file no matter what RGB values I use or what format I save it in or what the different channels are set to they always come out with a blurry super high shine on them that I can't seem to control no matter what.

Can someone explain and easy way that I can edit the bump maps and have the end result look normal? I am something of a ludite and while I have the NVidia Texture Tools Exporter (stand alone) and GIMP I have am not very familiar with them as my normal painting is done in Paint Shop Pro with DXT format saving done in Paint.net. I use ModelConverterX to do rough cuts of my textures to line things up so am familiar with that.

Anyone able to explain it to me like I'm a caveman trying to land a space ship on the moon? See attached for what happens when I edit the bump map. The section above the wing has been edited to move the panel lines around the exit forward but now no matter what I do it is always blurry and the shading/shine doesn't match even though the COMP files are matched between the sections.

Thanks in advance,
Nick

After a lot of trial and error, teeth mashing, fruitless google searching, and just plain old frustration I finally found a DDS format that makes them appear propperly. They don't compress as well and are twice the file size, but it looks right and that's what I was going for.
