• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Button and switch mapping

How are animated buttons and switches mapped? If a certain button or switch in a cockpit has a function that is normaly assigned to a the joystick, how is it assigned? Is there a file somewhere that tells it what to do or is it something in the model itself?

The code is built into the model itself during compilation.

Sooooo...I'm guessing that it can't be edited then...? Actualy editing the original isn't even what I want to do. Never mind that. Okay suppose I got permission from someone to use their avionics in another airplane (which I did), and I put said avionics in another airplane and it works, sort of. But because this other airplane doesn't have the ultra cool 3D buttons that were mapped in the modeling process like the original airplane, I have very little control...in fact, none. Would it be possible to map some of the functions of these avionics to say, a joystick or keyboard button? Maybe that FSUIPC4 program would allow that? Maybe...? Please...?

Hi brettt777,

did I get you right with this - you want to put the avionics of an airplane in another. But the original gauge is operated by 3D controls and you don't have the chance of changing your VC model. Correct?
If that is the case, the answer depends on the gauge itself. If it uses the FS default token variables you can use FSUIP as interface for (almost?) every event ID. If it uses customized L: variables you need to know the correct names to be able to modify them.

What you can do is to program some XML gauges to control your avionics. That means you use the visuals of your gauges but set the variables with your own gauges.

However it will be a lot of work I guess... Maybe you should be more specific. About what gauges are we talking about and are they programed in C++ or XML?

Actualy they are the MFDs and HUD out of the Accel pack FA-18 that was made right here at FS developer. I talked to someone here some months ago. I don't remember who it was but I believe they were directly involved in the avionics development for that plane. Anyway, he did in fact give me permission, in fact encouraged me to use the avionics in other planes. But, I would have to figure out how to map the controls ect., since the originals were mapped to the 3D model. I am almost certain they were programmed in C++. So, can something like that be mapped to joystick or keyboard buttons using FSUIPC4 or something like that?

You were told precisely how to discover the custom L:variable names for the 3d pushbuttons.

Go back and reread the replies again.
