• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS .cfg parameters ??

How do developers ( and Modders) come up with such precise values.

ie
roll_moment_delta_aileron = -0.257 ??

Is there some way to calculate what this should be, to this precision ???

It seems to me that most of the flight_Model.cfg values are just pulled out of thin air

(or should I say THICK air, as so many do not seem valid at higher altitudes where the air is thinner !!)

If ever there was a reason to get X-Plane, it would be to be able to design a plane with some correct parameters !!! ????

What am I missing -- is there a design tool in MSFS that will calculate these parameters ???

is it really necessary to know all this to be able to correct;y determine these parameters ??

Well, the biggest difference between Ms Fs approach and XP's one is that XP calculates all of this on it's own...

I believe in MSFS most devs calculate it using simple proportions and some trial & error having reference "good" models previously available and probably developed by themselves, and comparing between sometimes really difficult to find real world data for the specific aircraft they're designing.

Ofc, if you've got the knowledge and patience to go through the math calculations there some reference texts on the internet, and there's Yves doc on the msfs flight dynamics you can get the link from:

Other sims follow a similar approach to MFS ( Aerofly fs ), and there are approaches which are closer to XP ( Il-2 Battle of Stalingrad ), or make use of really expensive Fluid Dynamics software to get some of this parameters from virtual wind tunnel tests ( ED add-ons for DCS World ).

FS/FSX/P3D air file values were saved as binary and the digital equivalent consequently assumed an appearance of accuracy which was not necessarily justified.
