• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

CFS2 gmax export question

Hi all.

I asked this at the sim outhouse as well...

What is the export process you use for CFS2 aircraft?

I ask because I've found I can use a makemdl.cfg file to produce the mdl:

Code:
[Settings]

[Options]
Debug=1
KeepErrorLog=1
Keep=0
Optimize=0
FS8=0
CFS2=1
[Scenery]
If Keep=1, then ASM code is kept... it is not CFS2 code, but FS2002 code. Optimize=1 turns on code optimization. FS8=1 turns on FS2002 compilation, but CFS2 should then be set to 0.

Is this what others have found?

I have read a bit about using Middleman, but I don't think it's needed.

Dick

Hi Dick,

Interesting. Is this with the FS2002 makemdl or does it work with the FS2004 version as well?

Also did you disable optimize on purpose?

Hi Arno.

I disabled Optimize just as a test to view the difference in the saved log.

The MakeMDL is from 2002. I ask only because I have read about some convoluted methods to get a MDL, using Middleman or Model Commander.

I'm just wondering why those plugin 'interceptors' were used, if the cfg file handles this without any problem. Is it just that no one had tried a cfg file?

My memory tells me the makemdl.cfg file was discovered during fs9... so perhaps it was never applied to CFS2 or FS2002.

Or is there a better reason why Middleman or Model Commander should be used?

In CFS2, FS2002 objects display just fine, but the aircraft must be of CFS2-type.

Dick

Dick, the primary reason for MiddleMan and ModelCommander was (and still is) convenience, since it allows one to change options "on the fly" so to speak.

One of the best features (for a/c designers at least) is the ability to enable an automatic creation of an "interior model" based on the "exterior model," which is very handy during the development process. :cool:

Using only the .cfg file, one must close GMax, edit the .cfg, then relaunch GMax, and reload the project before exporting again.

On the other hand, I've never had any success with MM/MC at all when working on scenery! :o

Hi Bill.

You can edit the makemdl.cfg while gmax is open, and save the options you want... it is only unavailable when gmax is exporting. No need to relaunch or reload gmax.
