• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 Chrome recipe

Hi folks, I am converting my LDR Mallard from FSX to P3D v4+ standards with PBR textures and I've come across an issue I've not seen with other aircraft I've converted. For some reason anything that has a 'chrome' material is coming in super shiny and with a glass-like surface. I'm not sure if the material recipe changed between FSX and P3D or maybe it's the alpha on the texture sheet that is the issue. Here are a couple of shots for reference:

The slightly domed knobs on the levers look like ball bearings......

The switch toggles look very glassy but I can live with that......

The real issue is with the window winding handles that are coming in like silvered glass and all detail is lost in the shine.....

Anyone have any ideas whether it is the 'recipe' that changed or the alpha channel behaviour?

I will play with the alpha and diffuse later to see if I can make any improvements.

For reference, I just checked the model again in MCX and the 'chrome' parts are still set to FSX standards and have not had the PBR option applied to them. Maybe I need to make them PBR and create the 'metallic texture' to go with that.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I know nothing regarding 3D modelling... but.. IRL chrome is most definitely quite shiny and smooth. I would suggest that perhaps it is FSX that was displaying chrome incorrectly and not P3D v4. The small toggles would most definitely be shiny chrome but I suspect the throttle handles would be burnished aluminum not chromed.

The cowl flap levers are aluminum and on the overhead panel texture sheet it's just the knobs on the end that are the chrome material. I just double checked and in fact the toggle switches are NOT the chrome material but are part of the PBR texture sheet for the overhead panel. The window winder has the chrome material and the one that is most noticeably 'wrong' as it is just too shiny and glass like instead of looking like chromed metal.

I have managed to reduce the 'glassy' look by adjusting the grey levels in the diffuse/albedo texture and in the alpha channel too. The addition of a small amount of 'noise' in both also helped. It would seem that the optimum grey levels for chrome are different between the two sims.
