• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Closing A Runway

Hi Guys,

I'm new to FS Planner. I will probably only be using it in the most simple way compared to every one else. As with AFCAD2, all I ever needed to do is close a runway here and there at select airports. I see the option for this under the primary and secondary runway sections.

What I'm confused about is what selections need to be checked for compiling? I don't want to screw an airport up, just close a runway, save it, and then go fly.

Thanks in advance,

John

Hi Guys,

Any help on this? I would appreciate it.

Thanks again,

John

Hi John,

The easiest option would be to check off all the write options for the airport except for Scenery, Triggers, Towers and Taxiway Signs. Then make sure all Navigation Options are unchecked.

Then under the Delete tab, make sure all the General Delete options are checked except for Control Towers. Make sure that all Delete Runways and Delete Start Points are checked and Frequencies unchecked.

That should allow you to make the basic changes to the runways.

Don't want to start a new topic, so I'm posting here:

I created a new airport which wasn't in FSX yet. It's all fine, but I now want the aircraft to start and land in reverse directions: start on runway 8 and land on runway 26.
But whatever I choose in the primary/esecondary takeoff/landing options, AI aircraft always land on the same runway as they started. Maybe that's because they simply circle the airport. Would it be different if they approach from another airport?

Any help apreciated. :)

Into the wind all the time...

Its all about landing into the wind bud... Aircraft always land with a head wind, so I imagine if you changed the wind direction after a few ai plane's left that the inbound aircraft would hit the opposite end which would now be facing into the wind... That's what 12 years of flying has taught me.. lol

I would agree with that, bus I hoped that a closed runway would be a stronger argument than a 2kts headwind. :D

I guess I will have to live with it...

Oh your trying to close one end to arrivals but not landings and visa versa on the other end??? I am not sure why that wouldnt work?

In FS a runway is a single piece of code unlike a real world runway.

The runway is only identified by its base end and not 2 different ends. Only the base end of the runway carries the runway number in XML and the opposite end is identified internally as the reciprocal end which carries the number. FSX for example sets the runway 07/25 as a base end 07 runway. That becomes what is called in the bgl the primary runway. There is no runway 25 which is the reciprocal but only a Secondary runway tag in the XML.

That means what ever runway end is the active for takeoff that always has to be the same runway for landing irregardless of wind strength. FSX uses a light a varible wind value along with a code that determines the default active runway based on many coding factors used as a scoring system expressed in a number type value.

Only if the wind direction is strong enough (above light and varible) will the runway direction turn around. When the runway direction does turn around based on winds, in most cases (other factors are involved) then once again the takeoff and landing is always the same runway end.

A runway will not normally turn around when winds change if ATC is already vectoring a user or AI plane toward the active runway end. This also includes the runway end the user plane just took off from. Even if the winds change after you took off under ATC control you are expected to land on the runway you departed from.

There is a work around. After you have departed a certain runway end as per ATC you must pause the sim and change the wind direction. How strong must you make the winds is a varible code internal to FS. If the runway you took off from has a default ILS and proper approach code it will continue to be the active runway with winds less the 8 kts (light and varible). The ILS end of a runway carries a higher priority then a runway that does not have a ILS. Regardless of the type runway you departed on, when the sim is paused always reverse the winds and set @ or higher then 8 kts.

Now unpause the sim and continue flying for a few moments. This gives FSX the time in code to recognize the winds have changed. Now pause the sim again. Go to the pulldown menu and select the World|Map mode. You will see a heading value of your airplane. Change that by 1 degree and click OK. This will cause a reload of the sim code and all departures and arrivals will be reset to the opposite end of the runway you took off from.

Is that practical? No. Only until FSX and the designers start coding a piece of asphalt called a runway as 2 different runways we are somewhat at a disadvantage. The code for a runway is 07/25 not 07 and 25. This is not a limitation with the Airport Design Utility Editor you have choosen to use (FSXP, ADE, AFX) but the code in a compiled bgl. No where in the compiled bgl does it list 07 as one runway and 25 as another runway which is what a Utility will show by design. FSX, the XML and the compiled bgl only see 07 as a runway with the reciprocal as the code called the Secondary runway.

Probably a lot more then you really wanted to know.

hope some of this is helpful

Jim, thank you very mich for this great post. I never understood why things happened the way they do - now I see a bit clearer. :)

Of course the only thing I know now that what I was looking for is not possible, but I guess that's ok for now.

This fact makes me extremelly sad, since there is a number of airports that I need to create and are strictlly one-way in and other way out because of the obstacles at the end, be it high trees or mountains. Making AI traffic for these is unfortunately plain stupid, since the attempts to land thru a mass of trees or a mountain looks quite silly. Pitty . . .

Just a thought: Does FS look for the true heading of the runway or for the designators? If that is the case, couldn't we place 2 runways very close to each other, with one having designators rotated by 180°? One runway is for TO only the other for Landing only. :teacher:

I believe it uses both. For the actual heading of the runway, the heading that you enter is used, 68.123 for example. But to specify the runway for ATC or in the drop downs of starting locations for the airport it uses the ident, such as runway 70 Left for example.

What Russell says is true. The problem is the designator in this case.

You cannot compile 2 runways with the same designator even if they are rotated 180 degrees.

what that means is you would need 2 07/25's where as the base of one is 07 and the base of the other is 25. But, again the compiler will not compile because both are still 07/25 runways regardless of which way they are rotated and which is the base end.

@ adr179

Maybe in the next version of FS it will see each end of a runway as 2 runway end system so they can be set up like many airports in real world.
