Maybe I never noticed this in previous versions, but SketchUp 2017 imports Collada files and their DDS textures correctly. One can also use these textures as materials in Sketchup and if the material names are edited to match the DDS file name, the Collada export preserves the textures correctly when the exported DAE file is opened in MCX.
However, one can still not use other DDS files to create new materials. There may be other hidden pitfalls, but I just tried revising the stock P3d KOKC airport terminal (which lost one of its buildings in real life) and it worked flawlessly.
