• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Creating Buildings

Hello All,

Is there any way to make " CUSTOM " Buildings? like with names and certain textures on them?

Please help
Isaac

Hi Isaac,

Buildings are made using a 3D modelling program.

Gmax is a free program which can be installed, and the Deluxe version of FSX includes the Software Development Kit to "plugin" to it and create buildings and scenery objects.

#DSMax is less available (and expensive) and not really a beinner option

If Gmax is not your style, then FSDS is used by many to create scenery ... which is not overly expensive.

There is a fair learning curve with each of these programs and development.

Another option is google sketchup. Which is probably slightly easier to learn.

Okay Thanks,
hcornea And Arno

Arno,
I got Google sketchup and have played around with it and I can make it,

QUESTION: Just how do you take the 3D object and put it into Flight Sim X?

Thanks
Isaac

Look at the tutorials in the sketchup forum. First step is to get ModelConverterX and check for that in the tools - modelconverterx forum.

Hey,

I downloaded the " ModelConverterX " and tryed to Import a Google Sketchup File and it wouldnt upload

Thanks!
Isaac

You may have to be a little more clear .... I am not sure what you were trying to upload.

ModelconverterX should be able to import and from there export an FSX MDL file.

Yeah I am saving out of Google Sketchup and there are only 5 to 7 saving options ( File Types ) and FSX MDL is not one of them

Help!

Isaac

The idea was to Save a Google Sketchup File from Sketchup.

Open that file in ModelconverterX

Export from ModelconverterX into the FSX model format.

This is the whole purpose of using Modelconverter. If there was a MDL format export option in Sketchup, then you would not need to use it.

You export from sketchup in DAE format. That creates a file of your model with DAE extension, and a folder with all the textures exported. I then move the DAE file into that folder (so all are in the same place, then import the DAE into ModelconverterX. If all goes right you should see your model displayed within MCX. Note that you have to set up MCX so it knows where xtomdl and a few other things are located. Then assign a guid to your model (MCX will create one for you) and probably use the mass texture editor to convert the jpg from sketchup into legal textures for FS. There's some other things to try, like drawcall minimizer and LOD generator, but just to get started you an ignore those. Then you can export as an mdl file. To use the mdl you have to put it into a library bgl and also create a placement bgl for it using Library Creator, or import the mdl into some other object placement utility, like ADE.
