• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Custom Pavement and Projected Mesh

Hello. I made a test slab of pavement in Blender and textured in Substance (pictures attached). I have a few issues. Although it looks OK from a distance, not so much close to the ground. I read something about COMP textures in the SDK but not much information was provided about them. What are they? Also, what are "detail textures" in Blender under the MSFS materials? I suspect this is MSFS version of what we called decals in X-Plane?

My other issue is, my object only shows if added as a "scenery object" - Not via "projected mesh". While it does load in projected mesh, it only shows when I click on the manipulator handles, as I soon as release the click, the object disappears. I'm trying to find a good tutorial on projected meshes but have not found any. So, if anyone has experience with this method, please let me know.

Finally, does anyone know how to import PBR materials to use within the sim?

Thanks!

The COMP textures includes the (Occlusion / Roughness / Metallic) Texture or the PBR information. (R=Occlusion , G=Roughness , B=Metallic )
For creating projected mesh it is enough with the Base Color Texture and the Occlusion / Roughness / Metallic Texture.
You can see and experiment with the default textures.
I use the ALBEDO textures with the Base Color Texture in 3Ds max.

The default textures are located on:
C:\Users\mendi\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Official\OneStore\fs-base-material-lib\MaterialLibs\Base_MaterialLib\Textures
C:\Users\mendi\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Official\OneStore\asobo-material-lib\MaterialLibs\Asobo_MaterialLib\Textures

So far I have created projected meshes with squqre and rectangular polygons, If I use complex shapes with bends there are artifacts and errors on the textures shown on the polygons.

There is a sample project for projected mesh and works well, and there is a material tutorial with PBR examples for 3Ds max 2019.

Alfredo

......@PEACE FARM,

When you view your ProjectedMesh layer close up, does it ( The Texture ) look all washed out with an “ Asphalt “ appearance bleeding through ??

......@Alfredo,

Would you mind showing us a close up of your Textured ProjectedMesh layer.
So far you have shown examples of what looks to be a Textured Plane, with an acceptable resolution, but not the end result as a Textured ProjectedMesh.
Are you seeing the same as what I describe above for example ??

Rgds,

Pete.

Thanks for the reply, Alfredo. Now, when exporting the object (I use Blender), what is the COMP texture considered? Is it a "detail texture" or a should I put in the slot of a "normal map" - ?

I don't see the Projected Mesh unless I click on it (and don't release mouse). I'm still looking for instructions on how to properly set up the projected mesh project. Very confused.

Sorry I don't know Blender.
Did you try the Projected Mesh sample on the SDK ?
