FSXA CVXExtractor Help PLease

I am trying to make a kml file for the shoreline of Oahu, HI. I found the file. It is in the Scenery\0003\\scenery\cvx0624.bgl.
I tried following the example in the CVXExtractor text file.

Here is my entry:

cvxextractor -i "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\0003\scenery\cvx0624.bgl" -t KML -o C:\Users\Bob\My Documents\Test -f Shorelines
-latMax 21.09 -latMin 20.57 -longMax -156.74 -longMin -155.86

It will not create the file in My Documents folder.

Can anyone please help me. Thanks, Bob.

Hi Bob:

CVXExtractor is a CMD-mode utility that, like other 'DOS-type' executables, may require long file-names and/or paths to be input within quotes; so if you use:

Code:
cvxextractor -i "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\0003\scenery\cvx0624.bgl" -t KML -o "C:\Users\Bob\My Documents\Test" -f Shorelines -latMax 21.09 -latMin 20.57 -longMax -156.74 -longMin -155.86
...you should get a successful extraction into a "cvx0624..kml" file.

However, that file, displayed in Google Earth shows a selected area too far SE of Oahu, HI :alert:

You may wish to try instead, this input string (...at the CMD prompt:)

Code:
cvxextractor -i "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\0003\scenery\cvx0624.bgl" -t KML -o "C:\Users\Bob\My Documents\Test" -f Shorelines -latMax 21.736389 -latMin 21.223366 -longMax -158.331790 -longMin -151.614602

Hope this helps ! :)

Hi Gary. Thanks. I copied your exact path in your message. I have my CMD prompt setup so I can right click to paste it in. I did paste it in and it did not create any file in My Documents. I even tried making a folder called Test in it with no results. I noticed in the cfg file that it says NetFramework 4.5. I have 4.52. Is that OK? Thanks, Bob.

Here is a screenshot of it before I hit Enter.

Hi Bob:

AFAIK, DotNet Framework 4.5.2 should be a cumulative file set which works OK.

However, I will have to analyze this scenario a bit further and get back to you via this thread later. :alert:

I'm experiencing inconsistent results with ongoing use of this utility after a incorrectly structured input string was used during tests. :scratchch

Sorry I won't have an answer as soon as anticipated; I should properly test this further before contacting author Patrick Germain. ;)

Is the 'lon max' and 'lon min' switched around?
I tried it both ways, and still got no output beyond a generic 1 KB size KML file on all subsequent attempts (after an initial result using a incorrectly structured input string). :scratchch

Here's the KML extract from that initial test result with the incorrect input string (...looks great in Google Earth, but needs the input coordinates for CVXExtractor adjusted to the NW to intercept Oahu, HI):

This worked for me:

Code:
cvxextractor -i "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\0003\scenery\cvx0624.bgl" -t KML -o . -f Shorelines -latMax 21.09 -latMin 20.57 -longMax -155.86 -longMin -156.74

I ran this commandline from the same folder CVXExtractor is in. The "." for output means place it in this folder. 706 kb in size. I swapped the longitudes.

That one worked OK, and also looks great in Google Earth (...but needs the input coordinates <-or CVX *.BGL file name -> for CVXExtractor adjusted to the NW to intercept Oahu, HI). :)

Here's Oahu, the command was:

Code:
cvxextractor -i "C:\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\0003\scenery\cvx0524.bgl" -t KML -o "." -f Shorelines -latMax 21.796875 -latMin 21.09375 -longMax -157.5 -longMin -158.4375

Hi JR. Thanks. That's GREAT! I appreciate the help. As you can see in the attached pic there is a difference between the GE and the FSX shoreline in places. I had my sailing ship too close in this area and got land contact. The rest of the island looks good. Now if I can get cvxextractor working on my system it will help me a lot. Regards, Bob.

Just a question... why do you need the decompiled shorelines? Drawing them in google earth would make a much better shoreline.

Dick

Dick, he's trying to make shipping routes for AI ships using default shorelines and his boats were running aground when he traced those out in GE without knowing exactly where the default shorelines are.

The reason I want the actual FSX shorelines is that when I make a ship traffic kml around a shoreline or a river using GE alone is that when I run the resultant traffic file in FSX I get shoreline problems causing me to go aground due to the difference between GE and FSX data. It's time consuming to make a kml, recompile it, and then find it causes several shoreline problems, go back to GE and adjust the kml and restart. Bob.

Ahhhh. Great use for the extracted files.

Rather than using the long filename paths in quotations, why not just copy the bgls to a folder containing the CVXExtractor. You can delete the copies when done with them.

Code:
cvxextractor -i cvx0524.bgl -t KML -o "." -f Shorelines -latMax 21.796875 -latMin 21.09375 -longMax -157.5 -longMin -158.4375

Dick

Hi Dick. Thanks. I have tried that and it will not create any files in the folder containing the cvxextractor.exe. Should it write the file as a kml file directly in the folder containing the cvxextractor.exe? Bob.

Hope you don't mind me chiming in here, but a silly question......after typing in the command line you do press "enter" to execute the program right? It seems to just close for me and not produce any output files.....

what I've typed in.

cvxextractor -i "c:\cvxextractor\cvx_sydney.bgl" -t kml

I've place the cvx_sydney.bgl file (shoreline of sydney harbour) in the cvxextractor folder for ease of use and left the -o -f and lat/long entries as default

Yes you do need to press Enter. If your .bgl is in the same folder as cvxextractor.exe then you wouldn't need the full path to the .bgl but providing the path is correct it should still work.

Try this one:

cvxextractor -i "cvx_sydney.bgl" -t kml

I found if I don't specify an output folder it creates a folder bearing the name of the .bgl and outputs the .kml there. If you wanted it to output into the same folder then you'd need -o "." so:

cvxextractor -i "cvx_sydney.bgl" -o "." -t kml
