• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Damage Model

Is there any way to create a better damage model for FSX using simconnect? Second I noticed that Christopher Sykes has created bomb loadouts for adding to mission files then flying them would it be possible to create ammunition in gmax and use the same format and just add lines to Chris's sim.cfg file?

In gmax when I created a 50cal bullet I then tried to shrink it using 2004 aircraft mdl I could not go past a specific size. Could there be a way of creating dummies in gmax or in the FSX SDK which I will be loading up soon and using the simconnect to create trajectory and ammo for guns in FSX?

Why you might ask am I interested in adding this is becuse this flight sim to date has the full world environment and it would be fun to take it to the next level and there are great developers working on making the best flight simulation on the market why not create a better damage model for the planes and a way of combat.

That is no help - I know that, but

Who need that?

Why must a civil Flightsim to go Miltary Platform?
It is enough to see Military Planes and Helicopter
to see there.
Why Bullets and Guns and the another s...happens
put in the FS?

If you like that install Lock On or CFS.

Limited environments.

So in our world you are saying that groups flying in this simulation are not taking part in any training operatiions. This is a flight simulation and the majority of planes downloaded and created are of a military background. So why not create at leats a better damage model so planes suffer correct problems and not just OVERSTRESSED and start over. To add munitions in my oppinion would not be a step in the wrong direction, but a move forward to a more engulfing simulation. Which would take back some of the market lost with cfs 3.

Great example was cfs 2 and fs 2002 were compatable which means that the developments that were happening for fs 2002 appplied to cfs 2 and that made both worlds more enjoyable.

The top level realist flight environment of FSX is not offered in any of the top level combat sims. All are confined and limited. Any developer that is adding DLLs to simconnect and FSUIPC could add a better damage model for planes even comercial planes maybe wear and tare as you fly that plane over time you have to go through longer flight checks or something like that. The fun of flying in combat matching whits againts another individual is always fun and this sims flight dynamics are one of the best(nothing compares).

Where on earth did you get the impression that "the majority of planes downloaded and created are of a military background?"

For twenty-five plus years FS has been a civil flight simulator for the vast majority of users. Just a casual review of the aircraft files and top downloads from any of the major flightsim libraries would demonstrate this...

There are plethora reasons why MS/ACES removed the limited damage modeling that did exist, and nearly every one revolves around legal and liability issues.

Nice to read your statement Bill.

I'm not against Combat Sims - but please, let the FS what it is.

Realistic Damage

I guess I don't see the issue with having a better plane damage model, it would only add to the realism of the sim. Second to community size this community could be even be larger than any other flight sim on the market if you drew in the combat flight crowed. Each server could set up what they truly enjoy, but as people get involved with flight sims in general the numbers flying FSX will be quite massive.

The more you have enjoying the flight sim genre the better and nothing compares to the FSX environment. I think thats the reason why I am hoping that a developer will take this issue on using the SimConnect or FSUIPC.

As n4gix says, there are "issues" with companies not wanting their products to be depicted poorly. It's nothing to do with the sim being more realistic.

Take car sims for example: Ferrari are notoriously strict on how their products are depicted. Very few games get away with showing Ferrari cars displaying damage. (In Need for Speed 2: Hot Pursuit, the user was blocked from using the Ferrari cars in the hot pursuit mode - being chased by the police - due to concerns over the image of their cars being used in illegal behaviour, even if only simulated.)

The aviation industry is perhaps more acutely aware of how detrimental poor representation could affect them, especially since sims came under the spotlight following 9/11. Boeing aren't going to want to see their aircraft exploding on YouTube, even in a sim. Airlines also aren't going to appreciate their liveries appearing on terrorist re-enactment sim videos.

Thankfully currently flight sims don't attract the same level of litigious oversight that cars do in the games industry. Use someone's brand and design in a console game and you may well get sued for infringements of trademarks and design. Yet there are precious few cases of aircraft manufacturers slapping cease and desist orders on freeware or payware developers, but they could...

Aircraft manufacturers might also take issue with unrealistic damage or failures. You could make the wing fall off an airliner in a high G manouver, but what if the manufacturer complained you were misrepresenting their product because it would not fail in such a way? As graphics get better these concerns are likely to get stronger. A manufacturer is not going to want to see their aircraft fall apart with bodies falling out in glorious HD DirectX 14 (or whatever) on the internet.

With FS being the open system that it is and allowing anyone to build their aircraft of choice, having them break apart (under possibly unrealistic conditions), might provoke them into action that could ruin the future of FS for all of us.

The failure system in FS is probably the best compromise. i.e. there is no cause and effect for an engine failure. You tell it when to fail using a timer, there is no ability for it to decide it's going to fail due to misuse that a manufacturer could take issue with. (And when they do fail, the engine doesn't fall off, which a manufacturer may claim is seriously misrepresentative and damaging to their image.)

All these concerns don't make a lot of sense to us and may seem petty, but corporations have large legal teams that thrive on petty. And if they're all currently looking the other way, we ought not try to attract their attention.

Having said that, I think if ESP is going to appeal to the military simulation market, some damage modelling and the ability to deform terrain and terrain objects from weaponry, is going to be needed.

Simon well spoken and understood so maybe thats why the Storm of War: Battle of Britain sim is being held in development so long, because I hate to say that Boeing is actually pursuing cases already in the simulation industry. Boeing closed the doors on the B17 and Avenger release for il2s Pacific Fighters. So I would say you may have nailed it, so realistic simulation I guess has gone when the sharks entered the water.

Was it not a Greek philosopher who said if you want to start the world over kill all the lawyers :). Just kidding some do good work and other are just plain pushing it.
