• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

DC 3 gmax model

Hi guys, first post here. I'm a new member of FlightOntario working on a scenery of my hometown airport CYFD. I want to include the two C-117s which are permanent residents of the airport as static parts of my scenery. I went searching for a Gmax model and found an FSX DC3 from the FSX SDK. I wondered what modifications would be needed to make it compatable with my Gmax for 2004, and if there will have to be mods to make it display in FS2004 properly. Any help or advice here will be greatly appreciated. I like this site, very informative and helpful for a new developer.

Hi,

Getting it to work would probably mean that you have to replace all FSX materials with "old" ones. That could be a lot of work and I guess the model might also be a bit too complex for a static model.

But I am not aware of another DC-3 model for GMax. Maybe you can look at the FreeFlight Design Shop?

At FFDS we have several DC-3/C-47 models, most of which are in the older AF99 format. However, for static scenery, viewed at a distance, these would be useful.

I've converted most of the library models to at least FSDS (fsc) files, which can then be converted to dxf an into gmax. (Come to think of it, there may be another way that *may* preserve textures).

THe FS-X DC-3, although converted to gmax (see fsinsider.com and the FFDS Design forum), is (in my opinion) too complex a model to use as static scenery.

Like Arno says, the materials would have to be converted, and you'll be going through a long list of uneeeded parts (delete the VC, etc. etc....)

If there is a DC3/C47 file you want converted, drop me an e-mail/PM, or post here... (although I'm caretaker for FFDS, I lurk here just as much, just don't tell Arno.. )

static DC3

I tried to upload a static DC3 to the Object market some time ago. I don't know what happened to that upload?

It looks like this.

The file should be somewhere on this server, but it's not listed in the object market. If you can't wait till Arno finds it, send me a P.M. and we will arrange something for you to get it.

I must have missed the notification email of that, I approved it now. For the future I want to close that forum and move everything to the Download section of the website.

Another approach might be export to MDL from FSDS and then with ModelConverterX to 3DS file. That should preserve the geometry and textures. Not sure how many "advanced" features will be lost on the way though :).

I've spent an interesting few hours....

ModelConverterX will read the FS-X MDL file generated with FSDS 3.5.1), and generate a 3DS file, but importing it into gmax it stops with an "invalid format".

Same if I take the same model in FSDS and export to API or SCA (using FSDS 2)

I can read the 3DS file generated in Truespace 7.6, though, but not in gmax.

Hi Felix,

I got some more reports of similar problems, but have not been able to reproduce it here. So if you could send me the MDL/API and 3DS file for debugging I would be very happy :).

Arno I sent you a link to two zips. Each contains an FSDS 3.5.1 generated MDL file and converted 3DS. One gets imported successfully into gmax and the other does not.

Thanks, that will be very useful for debugging.

OK, found the issue. The 3DS file format only allows texture names in the DOS 8.3 format. So that is why longer texture names give a crash now when importing. Will be fixed in the next release.

Thanks. Am looking forward to the result.
