• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

DC-8 50 series update

I will probably do the beacon and/or nav light splashes and more or less slave the ground floodlights to the nose lights with a boneless polygon as you suggest. Should look pretty good.

It's coming along -- working on night lighting there too and on completing the engineer's panels. I'll post some screenshots when enough's been done to make it worthwhile.

Work conuinues. If all goes well there will be a custom dual INS setup fully operable and animated in the 3d vc.

I'll post more screens shots when there has been more progress of a visual nature.

Here's another VC shot as seen from the flight engineer's position. Not all that different from the last one, but now there is a realistic dual INS setup, fully functional in 3D. The VC is now modelled through 360 degrees, but some bits at the back are still a little rough. I finally found numerous high resolution photos of the navigator's station which had been a bit of a problem as the 62 series aircraft I had access to didn't have a nav station. An aircraft equipped with inertial navigation would dispense with the navigator, but the table and chair and other equipment would remain in place. A lot of work done on systems that can't really be seen and I have started refining the flight model as well.

Please excuse the black rectangle behind the radio altimeter. I had to move a few instruments to accommodate it and the panel needs re-texturing. I have found that almost no two DC-8s had or retained the same instrument layout and it has been a bit of a struggle to settle on something "typical".

Just out of curiosity, how were you able to make the INS CDUs functional in the vc?

Looks like it's really coming together; keep up the good work!

It's a custom system, not the freeware Simufly one. And it will load standard FSX flight plans automatically if desired -- much easier for the user.

Awesome stuff. I have always had a thing for LCD INS screens for some reason....Don't know why but always liked using them.

Lots of flashing lights on the keypad as well. And the suspense in waiting to tune your first VOR after an ocean crossing, wondering how much drift there's been...

I'm getting really excited for this. Would it be possible to include a list of LVars for those who wish to make 2d popups (like me)? I like being able to control certain things that could be operated in real life without taking your eyes off of the runway.

Possibly, at some time after release, although I'm not making any promises. Right now I am just focussing on getting it finished.

Great work. looking forward. Here the Dc 8 were mostly operated by passenger airlines. the B 707 had not presence. just in the army, something curious.

Puts the Justflight one to shame! Can't wait for this!
One suggestion - Have you animated the trim handles to reset to their central position on the axis?
In Douglas and McDonnell Douglas aircraft, you push the trim handle forward or backward until you've set the trim to you're desired position and then let go of the handle, returning it to it's central position. The trim setting is indicated on an axis next to the handle as I can see you've modeled. So in essence, you move the handle ONLY until you achieve the desired setting displayed on the indicator axis, and then the handle resets to it's position in the middle of it's axis.

Also, I have access to a full DC-8 flight simulator so if you have any questions regarding systems and what not feel free to ask me and I can run it by the folks at the sim facility!

Yes, the trim handles are animated correctly. I have a video that shows them in motion. And the trim will move at half a degee per second like the real thing using the default commands.

Thanks for the offer to help. I do have many manuals and an ex DC8 pilot and flight engineer giving advice so I may not need to take you up on that...

Hi Folks,

First I noticed this - superb effort... I recall messing around with the HJG 707's in FS9 and it was nice having a different experience with early jets that lacked power - - - long take off runs - and shallow ascents... Looks like it will be a hoot to fly... Fine work...

Regards,
Scott
