• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX dds problem in FSDS v3.5

I posted this as a reply but thought I might post it here as well. Sorry for the redundancy.

DDS shows up in FSDS 3.5 in the window when I choose the texture. (if I choose all files not just bmp) This dds is dxt3'd.It look fine. I go to paste this (cropped or otherwise) onto the side of an object I'm working with..... preview pane shows the dds result as if I were looking at it with a program that cannot 'see' dxt'd files!!! In FSX it shows fine but of course it shows all of the texture, not just the part that I cropped.

Few of the modelling programs will show formatted (DXT1/2/3/5/DDS) bitmaps easily.

Your best bet is to simply keep an 8-bit basic bitmap for mapping/texturing purposes in the program, and create your DDS or other formatted bitmap for the \texture folder.


If you want to see how it will look in the sim, without loading up FS-X, use FSRepaint.
 
So- if I do an object in bmp, after I'm done compiling and pluting it into a library of my choice, then take that bmp and change it to a ddsdxt1 or3 or 5? My object in the library will still use the dds even though it used to be a bmp? Bob

FOr that matter, your main iamge - the one which you use to make the REAL editing - should NEVER be a bmp or dds. You should keep the "original" layered image in your program's native format - *.psp for PaintShopPro, *.psd for Photoshop, etc., and simply use a "throwaway" (flattened 8-bit) bitmamp for mapping purposes.

You can texture with a *.bmp" for FSDS, but then convert to DDS from your native format editing program.
