• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Decals on a window

Is there a way to place a material on a transparent texture? I want to place a decal on a window. Can you do that with a multi-material or a composite material?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
don´t know if I really understand your question but probably the best way is using the alpha-channel of the texture to place an object on the window.
For more informations take a look at the wiki.

Clone the polies of the window where the decal is going to sit, move them away from the window 1 or 2mm and UVW map your decal texture on it (make sure everything around it is transparent (alpha channel!)).

Thanks Bjorn. I wasn't sure that would work on a transparent texture. I thought maybe it would be visible from the other side...

I have done it before, but its tricky. You are better off doing a seperate hovering polygon object for the decal. FS9 is easier for that, but still you have to have a black Alpha and in the decal zone, have a white Alpha background to make that area Opaque. With FSX, you need to make the area transparent (the entire thing) and then reduce settings to opacity, then figure out which setting allows for Alpha to work transparency (if thats possible). For hovering hardware with a black surround, I have to use .99 transparency to get the black zone to disappear, using also a white Alpha background on the object graphics zone.

Tricky...

I think I'll just hold off on this then until I get a little more experience under my belt... :)

What about this? Make a plane, put the decal on the plane, take a spline and trace the shape of the decal, convert it to an editable poly or mesh, then map the decal to it. Then you end up with something to mount the decal on that is exactly the same shape and you can hover it just above the window, plus it's only one poly. 31 faces, but only 1 poly.... :)

When exported, that "one poly" will be retriangulated into 31 polys anyway... :D
