• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Default Car Headlights

Hi

I noticed while looking though the default FSX library files using ModelconverterX that some of the vehicles have a blank plane at the front and rear of the car that in FSX shows a headlight texture.

Like this

This is what it looks like in FSX

Now the planes don't have a material associated with it (at least not in ModelConverterX) but I have found what I think is the texture used in FSX/Scenery/Global/Texture which is VEH_LightSheet.DDS and VEH_LightSheet_lm.DDS

Does anyone know how this is done? could it be an attach point if so where is it and what is it called?

I did try adding a plane to one of my models in Gmax but it doesnt seem to work in the same way. The lights do show but they show during the day and night and the plane used isn't quite transparent and the edges of the plane can still be seen. The FSX default light plane can't be seen at all and is only visible at night.

Cheers

Stevo ;)

Hi Stevo,

I have also seen this while testing ModelConverterX. I would have to dive a little deeper into the MDL to see if there is some special code for these lights. I'll do that after I finishe re-installing my laptop.

Hi Stevo,

It seems these polygons have the specular texture applied directly as diffuse texture as well. If that results in lights I am not sure, I will have to dig deeper for that. But it seems they are not using the textures you mention. I have seen that on other vehicles, but then ModelConverterX will read them correctly.

Hi Arno

Just getting back to this so sorry for the delay, did you find anything else?

Is it something that's hard coded?

It must be a plane as its part of the mdl file, its just what is attached to it either by name, attachpoint or as a material to make it work?

Stevo ;)

Hi,

I did not find the time yet to look into this in more detail. Hopefully soon.
