• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Is there any way I can make FSX display at the same resolution as TmfViewer?

Screen resolution 1920x1080, Aniso and AA.

TmfViewer:

FSX:

Zoom out (reduce magnification) and move your viewpoint closer? Not easy to do in top-down view.

It depends what your end-resolution is (7cm/px?) FSX will tend not to display that.

If you are using resolutions greater than 7cm/px and the global texture resolution is set to max (7cm/px)

then you may need to use the tweaks described by Dick Ludowise (rhumbaflabby)

I feel such a fool Ian.

I had texture resolution set to 60cm :o

With resolution set to 7cm I can easily create ground polylines / polygons:

Hi George:

I wonder if even higher resolution settings in the FSX.Cfg file might prove helpful to some types of FS development work when grabbing screenies or working in a FS run time interactive editor utility via top-down view ? :)

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showpost.php?p=627852&postcount=6

NOTE: FSX automatically sets the FS GUI terrain mesh resolution slider to 10 Meters when we set the texture resolution slider to 7 cm.

One might wonder if there is any benefit to manually setting terrain mesh resolution even higher (via FSX.Cfg edits) when setting the texture resolution slider to higher settings (smaller numeric values for inter-pixel distances) than 7 cm. ...such as when displaying some recent add-on sceneries using 'synthetic' 2 cm resolution textures ? :confused:

Assuming "Texture resolution" is the FSX equivalent of TMVL, as illustrated here:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showpost.php?p=633002&postcount=31

...one might consider these numeric relationships as a basis for use with higher resolution FSX.Cfg non-default scenery display parameters:

Code:
[TERRAIN]
MESH_COMPLEXITY=100
MESH_RESOLUTION=22    <--   9.6 Meter ('10' Meter)
TEXTURE_RESOLUTION=29 <-- 0.075 Meter ('7' cm)

Hope this helps ! :)

Hi George:

Hmmm... Now, why did I already know you were going to post that, and why did I still not explain it in advance via my post above ? :o

I guess one just can't be thorough enough when you are participating in a thread, George ! :D

So, even though I think it likely that you already know this, rather than leaving other readers confused about whether, how, and when this actually happens, I'm going to go the extra distance and explain it here (...which I really should have done in my post above. :rolleyes:)

To see the initial "automatic" coupling of terrain mesh and texture slider change when setting texture resolution to 7.5 cm in the FSX GUI:

1.) Set FSX Menu > Settings > Customize > Scenery tab GUI sliders to minimum resolution settings for terrain mesh and textures

2.) Be sure FSX.Cfg is not open in any text editor, so it "saves" parameter changes made via FSX GUI

3.) Exit FSX

4.) Restart FSX

5.) Navigate to: FSX Menu > Settings > Customize > Scenery tab

6.) Set Terrain Mesh resolution to 19 M < yep... 1 LOD short of "10 M" ! :stirthepo >, and Texture resolution to 7 cm

7.) Click "OK"

8.) Still in FSX, Navigate again to: FSX Menu > Settings > Customize > Scenery tab

9.) Observe that both terrain mesh and texture sliders changed when manually setting only the texture slider to '7' cm in the FSX GUI.

10.) Specifically, note that terrain Mesh resolution slider changed to "10 M" when "OK" was clicked after Step 6 above

NOTE: Obviously, the FSX Scenery display slider can be manually set to an even higher terrain mesh resolution AFTER one has had FSX "automatically" apply the initial 'required minimum mesh resolution' parameter relationship between the terrain mesh and texture sliders for a texture resolution of at least '7' cm via the FSX GUI, as we see in your screenie above. ;)

Hope this helps those considering these numeric relationships as a basis for use with higher resolution FSX.Cfg scenery display parameters ! :)

PS: Thanks for keeping the bar set so high for "thoroughness" here at FSDeveloper, George ! :p
