• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Direction Gyro

Hello. I see in the aircraft.cfg (in part) of a C172 this:

[direction_indicators]
//1 Type: 0=None, 1=Vacuum Gyro, 2=Electric Gyro, 3=Electro-Mag Slaved Compass, 4=Slaved to another
//2 Indicator number of slaving indicator if Type = 4
direction_indicator.0=1,0

It make sense, however, even after searching other aircrafts' cfg, I cannot find an example of:
direction_indicator.1=1,0

1) Can there be multiple DG's/HI's that function differently?
2) How would a DG/HI be assigned to either .0 or .1?

In Steve & I's F-111, some of those used & quickly found in some xml docs.
Used in failures & with if/elses tied to electrical busses.
[direction_indicators] direction_indicator.0=3,0 // MAIN (A:HEADING INDICATOR 1, radians) direction_indicator.1=3,0 // BDHI (A:HEADING INDICATOR 2, radians) (A:pARTIAL PANEL HEADING:2, bool) direction_indicator.2=3,0 // AP/HUD (A:HEADING INDICATOR 3, degrees) (A:pARTIAL PANEL HEADING:3, bool) direction_indicator.3=3,0 // HSI (A:HEADING INDICATOR 4,radians)

If I've read it right, the question is can more than one default DG drift at different rates and the answer (in that case) is No. You'd need to write your own class to do that and I haven't got a clue how to do it in XML. I did it in C:

but the maths may frighten you solid.

Hello DragibflightDesign. Thank you for your reply. No, I am not looking for two different drift rates but sort of close. What I would like to do is have one DG drift and another one, not - if it can be done without writing an XML gauge. The reason I asked was to find out how and why there is the:
direction_indicator.0=1,0
direction_indicator.1=1,0 , etc. option.

Thank you spokes2112. I will give the examples a try.

Hello spokes2112. I must sadly report that what I tried did not work. This is what I had in the aircraft.cfg (Baron 58):

direction_indicator.0=3,0 // for RMI
direction_indicator.1=1,0 // for HSI

In my real aircraft, an old C182D, I have to adjust my HSI heading to match the wiskey compass periodically due to drift cause by procession. In the sim though, I wanted the RMI to be slaved so: 3,0=Electro-Mag Slaved Compass so I wouldn't have to "adjust" it. I don't have an RMI in my real aircraft. I also didn't want to have to adjust the RMI, because otherwise, it would really be just an ADF.

When I attempted to use in the HSI xml gauge, per above message: (direction_indicator.1=3,0 // BDHI (A:HEADING INDICATOR 2, radians) ), the compass would rotate with change in aircraft heading, as expected. However, when I attempted to change the heading with GYRO_DRIFT_DEC/ GYRO_DRIFT_INC, no change to the compass. Only when I used:
(A:Plane heading degrees gyro,radians) did a compass change occur with GYRO_DRIFT_DEC/ GYRO_DRIFT_INC. I even changed (A:HEADING INDICATOR 2, radians) to (A:HEADING INDICATOR 1, radians) but that did not work either. To be honest, from above message:
direction_indicator.1=3,0 // BDHI (A:HEADING INDICATOR 2, radians) (A:pARTIAL PANEL HEADING:2, bool)

I don't know how the (A:PARTIAL PANEL HEADING:2, bool) is supposed to be used.

I know I'm supposed to use the Code option but it doesn't allow me to use text coloring - that I'm aware of because I tried before with no success. But here is the line of code I'm talking about using the blue highlighted:

<Element Name="Compass">
<Position X="130" Y="130"/>
<Image Name="directional_gyro_markings.bmp" PointsTo="East" UseTransparency="Yes">
<Axis X="115" Y="115"/>
</Image>
<Rotate>
<Value>(A:HEADING INDICATOR 2, radians) /-/</Value>
</Rotate>
</Element>

Okay, NM. I realized with the RMI, I use: ( A:HEADING INDICATOR 2, radians ) and with the HSI: ( A:PLANE HEADING DEGREES GYRO, radians ). Thanks spokes2112.
