• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Draw calls for multiple object placement.

I need to place a large amount of identical small items at a small airport. They all have LODs and they disappear at more than 20 meters. If I use an object placement tool to place these, will that require a separate draw call for each object placement, or will it already call the existing texture in the pipeline? Also, how do objects that are set to disappear affect fps? Can I have thousands of them that disappear from a few meters away and it not impact fps?

Thanks,
John

Hi,

If you have lods, there is no drawcall batching. Each object is its own drawcall.

Also not drawn objects give an overhead, since the engine has to evaluate to draw them or not.

Thanks, Arno.

I placed about 20-30 lights around and didn't notice an fps hit. Now I'll try with 100. :D

Hi,

Does it cause overhead even if you tell it to specifically not draw the object at so many meters. I'm grasping for straws here, but wouldn't it only have to check the buffer and replace the object if it were identical. I think maybe I am asking too much of the FSX engine.

So, I have a 4 poly LOD, a 6 poly LOD, and a 12 poly LOD with one draw call. Wouldn't it be better to just have them disappear at a distance, rather than leave a 1 poly LOD? If I leave a 1 poly LOD from a distance, then does it still have to determine whether/how the object is drawn or not, thus adding overhead anyway?

Sorry for my ramblings.

Hi,

Yes, any lod will give overhead to check. You might want to test without lod to see if the drawcall batching gives you more benefit.

I am using Gmax, and if I remember right from another post, Gmax doesn't support batching?

Correct. But you can import the model with my ModelConverterX tool and then export in a way that supports the batching.

Oh ! ModelConverterX does it
If your object duplicates several hundred times (ie taxi lighting), batching should give better results.

EDIT: too lazy to answer first...
