• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Edge or no edge?

Is it better to uncheck the 'edge' box in the Styles menu for making models? I can't make up my mind which is better. To edge or not to edge - that is the question.

I am pretty new to SU but it seems to me that edges help you to see where shapes and lines connect up. Turning edges off reduces visual clutter as you build your model. I do not think this setting has any effect on how your model is rendered - just a tool for helping you line things up as you build it. I could be wrong on all that but I tried it on and off and that's what I saw.

edges help in sketchup to add definition. I have not noticed it affect an export to dae and import to mcx for fs conversion. If I recall, mcx removes the edges on import, or FS compiler just ignores the egdes. turning them off periodically will show you how it will look in fs fairly accurately.
I work in layers to make it efficient. hidden geo and edge styles only help with modifications in the skp environment. there are a lot of functions. play around with them.

So it's only in SU that edges make any difference then. Once exported as a .mdl via MCX edges or not make no difference to the appearance - is that correct?

Hi,

The edges are stored in the collada file, but modelconverterx does not convert them to the FS mdl object. So you can keep them in sketchup no problem.
