• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Edit Poly vs, Edit Mesh

I've been reading up on some of this and doing some tutorials on modeling outside of FS, and it's curious. In almost everything I read or watch involving modeling, the author models in Edit Poly or Nurbs, where when I talk to someone in the FS world, it seems almost exclusively that people model in Edit Mesh.

So I wonder what you all prefer, and why you like one over the other...

Hey Kevin,

I jump back and fourth from E-Mesh to E-Poly. Perhaps about 60% of work is in E-Poly mode.

There are tools that exist for one and not the other, and there are tools that work better on one instead of the other.

For instance, I can divide a Polygon precisely with E-Mesh, and I can Divide and Create Edges in E-Poly. I can Edit_Triangulation in E-Poly, but not in E-Mesh.

Bill^2 is on it. I too use them fairly interchangably myself, although I tend to spend more time in E-Poly than E-Mesh...

As stated already though, it really comes down to what tools are available in each of the two modes.

I think perhaps the reason why many people prefer E-Mesh mode though is that you can quickly fool yourself with the "polygon count" when in E-Poly mode...

...you see, I can easily create a planar object with a dozen or more vertices that is still considered a single polygon by Max/GMax...

...but when re-triagulated by MakeMDL or XtoMDL will turn out be be two to three times that many trangle-polys!
